Should the Iowa Athletic Dept Fund UNI?

And people wonder why the state of Iowa is slipping in comparative secondary and elementary school educational ratings with the rest of country. (while probably not related, I recently read an article highlighting this and thus it was a subject of an earlier conversation that was tied into state politics).

However, this is laughable that it would even be suggested. Our state "leadership" and BOR are not all idiots, but it sure would seem that
some of their focus would be
better served in a different
capacity. This is a good example of why.

I have to take issue with the last post. Gartner is largely responsible for running off David Skorton and Bowlsby an saddling us with Sally Mason and Barta--the "idiot" label most definitely applies when the little twerp with the bow tie is the topic of conversation.

Iowa actually has 4 regent schools. And the concept that Iowa took "general fund" money, although technically accurate, but barely, is not 100% accurate.

its accurate in the exact same way as it is to UNI. its an apples to apples comparison. a large portion of the money is/was returned to the general fund for the cost of student-athlete attendance.

iowa residents should want UNI to be successful with the exception of the few times we meet them head to head.

my solution for UNI is this:

1. raise student fees modestly
2. provide talent waivers for some of the student-athletes
3. play iowa or isu every year for a somewhat-above-market "buy" price

Most UNI fans are hawkeye football fans and panther basketball fans, so maybe the U of I should fund 50%?

If Iowa needs to help fund UNI then Gartner's Iowa Cubs franchise needs to pay the City of Des Moines a fair market value price for its lease of Principal Park and share concession/parking revenue with the city and county...
Why does anyone pay attention to this idiot?

I agree with the all of the above. Daughter just visited UNI an most likely will go there. All sporting events are part of the tuition not free but prepaid. I expect a student activity pass required for all students. At $100 per student that is an additional 1,320,000 (13,200 students). Also I like the IA ISU match up annually. This keeps a ton of $$$ in the state and allows our state to pay themselves.

Gartner is Obama in disguise. Why doesn't he have the City of Des Moines raise the lease on that prime piece of real estate the Iowa Cubs play on? I guess it is fair that they pay nothing to rent that great property in downtown Des Moines. Oh, I guess it's ok because he and Sam get to put all those profits in their pockets.

Screw his socialist ideas. Close UNI and have the students go to Iowa and ISU. Oh wait, shut down ISU & UNI and you would have zero budget issues Mr. Gartner.

Plus we would be on even footing with Nebby as far as population base and competition in State. Sounds great doesn't it? Time to start a petition.

this is what i find consistently amusing...i am amazed at how many of my iowa/ISU friends "hope their kids go to UNI".

this issue is a classic example of a very vocal, ignorant minority making a lot of uneducated noise.

Please also let me know what cool words you are saying. My imagination is running wild. *************************

This already went through the ISU Boards. The answer is yes both ISU and IA are on solid ground and should contribute to the UNI athletic dept. UNI is a school dominated by in state students so it helps the state of IA. IA would pay more than ISU and each years payment could be different based on the financial condition of the dept. This would take the heat off the state funding as well. NEither IA or ISU would feel the pinch. It should be done.

Jon whats your thoughts. I know the ISU and IA extremists will say **** UNI let them burn in hell. That is no way to build "State" schools that have received state funding for many years in the past. Thoughts

This is without a doubt, the most asinine, ill advised, moronic idea ever hatched. Liberalism at it's core. Absolutley ludicrous and will never happen.

Pay them and turn those purple kitties into our beetches. I would have a good time with all my Panther buddies, "who's your daddy now?" :D

BTW, while we are helping out other schools. Can we pay off ISU's loan on that scoreboard and put a big azzz Tigerhawk on it?
