Should our dbacks and lbkrs hold when they get beat deep?

I see a lot of other college teams go for the grab and holding or blatant interference on long passes because it is only a 10 or 15 yard penalty. These players are either smarter than ours or coached to do this.

All I know is I wish Spearman had grabbed that running back running the circle route who beat him for the TD. Or at least forced him out of bounds by chucking him.

Sometimes I think we play too clean.

It is time for the coaches and players to use every edge they can get to get a win this saturday and move forward.

RB should have gotten bumped out of bounds but Spearman wasn't in position to do that. Wasn't even close to being able to grab a jersey. The real issue is that you have a tweener DE covering speedy players on wheel routes...that's just ridiculous.

i know for a fact that the guy that came in for lomax did this almost immediately - wasn't called on it as the ball wasn't thrown to his receiver, as i recall. the answer is yes.

I think the answer is yes, players foul intentionally in bball when they are beat.

Time to play smarter.

Spearman might have been able to dive and disrupt that receiver. just need to be coached that way.

Rarely should a LB hold a receiver. He should definitely try to bump/knock the receiver off his route to disrupt the timing. The issue was the same as the first game. The safety to that side jumped a shorter route over the middle leaving Spearman alone on a receiver. Iowa always plays a two-deep and almost never plays straight man. That was my observation of the play.

DB's on the other hand should grab if they are beat on a route.

I'd prefer the coaches teach proper footwork to prevent from getting beat. I'm not trying to call out Spearman, but he is getting beat a lot out of he backfield (all of the LBers are, actually). If he's going to be asked to cover out of the backfield, he needs to be taught better footwork/hip turning.

Everyone and their grandma knows that spearman is a very solid pass rushing LB who can play the run...this being because he would probably make for a good rush-end. He is weak in pass coverage. That's not being mean to the player. I think he is a talented player...covering receivers out of the backfield or otherwise is not a strength of his, nor should it be.

Our LBs are in a lot worse shape than I thought they would be.

Alston hasn't been as good as I had thought he would be.
Spearman is a tweener as others have mentioned.
Bower made 2 big plays against UNI but he doesn't look the part. He's undersized but of course he is young so he can add strength in time.

Perhaps the injury to Jewell who may have been a starter, but Perry's inability to step up as a guy who had a shot is disappointing.

Maybe it's time to look back at the trio of last year and realize just how good they were.

The answer to the question though is absolutley YES.

Always take a 15 yd penalty instead of giving up a TD.

Agreed about the rush end. His best ball will be on the edge with a hand in the dirt, IMO.

He does need much better technique in pass coverage. I'm not sure I would write him off in that aspect, but right now he's pretty rough.

I will say this to his defense... The 3 LBers we had last year were pretty good in coverage; But it wasn't always that way with them.
