Should Iowa Claim National Championships for 1921 and 1922?

I don't know why not. They have a compelling case in each of the two season:

1921

7-0 Record
Outright Big Ten Champions (never trailed in any of their seven games)
Invited to the Rose Bowl, but Big Ten blocked their trip
Voted #1 by numerous pollsters or rating services

1922

7-0 record (Beat a powerful Yale team in a road game)
Big Ten Co-champions
Voted #1 by at least one rating service

Iowa should recognize these seasons as national championship seasons, along with 1958. I don't know why they do not do it (there was no AP poll during those years)

Wait until the 100th anniversary of those seasons come up, then tout them up as National Championship seasons for all it's worth.

Absolutely claim them!

Iowa should also claim the 1900 National championship. In the tie against Northwestern the team had food poisoning, the hotel chef was suspended of having a bet on the game.

Iowa was also invited to the Rose Bowl following the 1900 season. It would have been the inaugural Rose Bowl, however the game was cancelled as the team was boarding the train.

The 1921 Iowa team was great, and would have beat California in the Rose Bowl. That would have made the National championship unanimous. Iowa emded up in a 3 way tie with Cornell and Lafayette.

We obviously didn't play Fielding Yost's Michigan team that year. His teams in that era sometimes went through entire seasons without being scored upon.

Michigan did play in the inaugural Rose Bowl the following season. The beat Stanford in a game that was shortened to three quarters because Stanford ran out of healthy players.

This website has a lot of information about the 3 way national championship tie in 1921, and the case for Iowa to be the mnc. Iowa’s 10-7 win over Notre Dame has a hige impact on that.

Aubrey Devine was the precurser to Nile Kinnick. One of Iowa's all time greats.

Duke Slater is one of two Hawkeyes ( Kinnick) to have their number retired. Slater Hall, where many football players lived in my 1980's college days, is named in his honor.

Actually Iowa beat Michigan 28-5 in 1900. Chicago was also a good team in 1900. Michigan players attended the Iowa-Chicago game the week before. Iowa won that game 17-0 using the guards back offense, and a powerful rushing attack up the inside. Knowing that Michigan scouted that offense, Dr. Knipe switched up the offense between the games to attacking the outside of the line, and it worked well.

Iowa didn’t give up a touchdown the entire season with their rock solid 7-4 defense. Field goals counted for 5 points.

That Iowa team could have been the best team in the nation that year.

I like your post, but the only other Hawk to have their number retired (other than Kinnick) is Calvin Jones, not Duke Slater.

Kinnick and Cal Jones have their numbers retired. Slater's is not retired.

1900, 1921, 1922 and 1958. So, 60 years since our last natty. Need to end the drought.

Hey, if NYC can claim to be the greatest city on earth, Iowa can claim 4 National Championships. At least we have evidence of it.

You are both correct. Calvin Jones, #62. Interesting that only two are retired. Of course with eighty five schollies plus non scholarship players they would run out of numbers fast. Some wear duplicates as it is.
