Should Daniels have gone down?

This isn't a thread calling out LD for being an idiot. Pretty much everyone agrees that most players will do the exact same thing. People are just saying, and rightfully so, that it would have been better to go down. No one is worked up. No one is calling LD out. It's just a simple conversation on a board meant for conversations, discussing what would have given us a better chance to win.

Have you read the recent ones? There is a post on this page using all caps and calling people delusional.

But I love it! We are undefeated, just beat our rival, and we still find something to get all mad at each other over.

I'm amazed that people are arguing that a 98% or so chance of winning is preferable to about a 99.9999% chance.
...and if something bad happens when trying to kill over 2 minutes of clock, you'd all rip on Ferentz or LD for not scoring when he had the chance. It's possible to lose either way, and yet by some miracle we found a way to hold on and win.

10-0. Go team.

There are people mad that others can't comprehend simple logic. No one is mad about how the game played out.

There would definitely be a thread on here with people saying he should have just scored. But they would be wrong. When you lose a game because you fumbled in victory formation, the only people you can blame at all is the center and the qb.

This thread should be over. All discussion should have ended after my definitive post on page 2. SMH, disappointed in all of you.

you know I am amazed more teams that are behind do not use this strategy at the end of the game. If a team is behind by 1 score and a runner gets a first down that would end the game once he is tackled, then the defense should just let the runner score.

The last 3 pages have all been about how awesome your post on page 2 was.

You people and your "pages". I use the Google extension "Autopatchwork", which combines all pages into one. It's beautiful when you're as lazy as I am.

I'm fine with them scoring, what I'm not fine with is rolling over in prevent defense. I never want to see it again. The Hawks D is well coached, they are far better off without it. Make them earn every single yard when they have to manage the clock.

You show me one guy who yelled get at LD to get down and I will call BS, no way anyone said that!!! No way!!

Seriously this is one stupid thread~ on par with the thread saying KF still needs to go..

I was completely fine with the touchdown, and I think even if Iowa lost I was fine with the touchdown. You shouldn't be trying to get into your running backs head things other than carrying the ball, and holding on to the ball. What if he was in the huddle trying to calculate out whether or not they could run out the clock if he got a breakaway instead of focusing on the play. Does he then lose the handoff or not see the hole? Does he overthink things and get caught and fumble the ball? Why even get something like that into a player's head? Its opposite to everything he has ever been taught.

The kid was recruited to tote the ball as far as he can until he's brought down. Period

Plus after he scored the whole crowd was going nuts. i can't remember the last time Kinnick was that insane after a touchdown. The "I-O-W-A" chant was going on during the entire duration of MN's next drive. Unfortunately Iowa's defense just got shredded.

The I O W A Chant after that TD was an All-Timer lasted the Longest and was one of the Loudest I've heard at Kinnick.. Section 109 Letter A.. We had a good one that lasted at the Pitt game this year but not nearly as long as the one last night.

I also also loved during the Notorious BIG song how the IPhone flashlight App got going throughout the stadium. The backdrop with the Blackout and the light was COOL as ****!!!

Do you think the Minnie coaches were smart enough to tell their players,if they get the 1st down, let the play go and allow them to score the TD? That way they get the ball back to try and score with the opportunity at the onside kick.

No. This is the same staff that mismanaged the game clock vs Mishitagain and could of possibly won game.

Do you prefer cognac or a port after your 5 course meal? That's what this discussion is about.

All this is true, but it doesn't mean it wouldn't have been a good idea if he happened to have the presence of mind to do it.

I dont know why it's so hard for people to grasp this concept but I'll try to explain it one more time. This isn't about calling LD out for making a mistake (at least for most people). It's not about calling Kirk out for making a bone headed clock management decision. It's simply about pointing out that we would have been better off if he went down.

I get that not everyone's brain works the same, but I couldn't imagine wanting to come on message board if I was the kind of person who was so close minded that I assumed someone has to be up in arms to care enough to discuss these things. It's a fun topic for some. If you don't like it, don't contribute. No need to be a fun hater.

Sorry, but as he broke through the line, I was saying that he should get down. In fact, I said it right after they called their last time out. I've coached HS FB for 22 years. As the resident math teacher on staff, it is my job to be the clock manager. It's my job to calculate how much time we need on the clock to take a knee, taking into account how many timeouts they have, etc. Also if we need to run a QB sweep to run extra time off the clock, etc.

I also tell the head coach if 1 more 1st down will "get us to a knee" (or get us to a point where we'll be able to take a knee). When we get to the point where 1 more 1st down will do it, we send in the play, for example, "I-Right, 22 Dive, Get Down". We practice this, just like practicing our 2 minute offense, etc. We also call "get down" when the other team may be letting us score when we might be able to run it down to 15-20 seconds.

In no way am I blaming LD for this at all, nor should he do this on his own. It CAN be sent in with the play call. Teams do it. I'm not blaming the coaching staff either, but presented it to the board as a point of discussion.

I see lots of things I could present as points of discussions for the board. It's fun, interesting, and passes the time until next week. For example, if we should'n't have been in prevent, what would you have run, cover 2 man? Cover 6? Or why wasn't our free safety rolling over the top on the toss sweep to prevent a HB pass as they're taught? I don't ask these questions, because I try to stay away from things which I feel would turn into posters ripping our players. I don't like that. I really don't like ripping the coaches either. I didn't think this topic would do that, but obviously I was wrong.

FTR, I'm not calling you out HawkPred 40. You're a good guy and one of my favs. Just something I needed to say.

Take your discussions elsewhere pal.

Today's presser:

Q. In the game against Minnesota, Leidner was able to move the ball down the field very quickly. LeShun’s touchdown there —

KIRK FERENTZ: Yeah, I noticed that. Really quickly, yeah.

Is KF steering away from where I think the question was going?
