Shot Selection

Last night's game was the first full game of Iowa basketball I got to watch.

Iowa's problem?

Shot selection.

I can not even count how many bad shots this team takes.

Oglesby dribbles up and takes an off balance pull up 3 pointer, Eric May turns down a wide open 3 look to take 2 steps closer and shoot a CONTESTED shot, Melsahn dribbling baseline into the paint with 2 trees on him and shooting it instead of recognizing the double team and passing to an open teammate, Melsahn being open within the first few seconds of the shot clock just inside the 3 and taking it (This isn't your shot bro, that's why they left you open out there).

These are just a few of the terrible shots they took last night. It was extremely frustrating.

This team either needs to push and try to catch the D off balance or needs to settle down on offense and wait for a good look.

p.s. Get rid of the full court press. It didn't account for many (if any) turnovers and we gave up lots of easy baskets because of it.

Disagreed. Did we take some bad shots last night? Sure. But, overall the shot selection was good. We had a ton of open looks that we just flat out missed.

It seemed like guys would pass up a shot, go to the bench, get scolded for not shooting and come back launching. May passed up a 3, went to the bench and came back to fire up 3 in short order. Oglesby no doubt is being told to shoot, shoot, then shoot some more. McCaffrey apparently believes in the ready, fire, aim philosophy. This is approaching junior high bball levels. Find the spot on the floor everyone is comfortable shooting from and put an X on it.

Good post....shot selection was sketchy at best. Other times we just shot bricks.

I can recall many open looks that didnt fall and bunnies not converted. Sure there are a few examples of bad shots but overall i wasnt displeased with the shot selection.

There were some decent looks but what the OP is saying is still correct.

There were probably 30 times when someone, and all of the perimeter players did it, would pass up an open three, hesitate, allow the defender to recover, then do a shot fake that accomplished nothing take two dribbles and end up shooting a contested long two.

This team is just horrible at things that seem to be instinctual. They constantly do the wrong thing at the wrong time and are without a doubt a collection of some of the worst passers I have ever seen. Feeding the post is apparently out of the question.

Ogelsby and White are the only ones who seem to have a natural feel for the game IMO. Once these two get a chance to team up with Gessel and Woodbury things will look allot different in terms of ball movement and getting open shots.

I have to wonder if basabe's struggles so fat can be attributed to his increased strength.

He looks like he lost a lot of his body control and didn't look comfortable.

And when it comes to shooting... It is all about muscle memory and when you gain a lot of strength it can really mess up your shot for awhile until you get used to it again. I don't think out overall shot selection is poor, but our ability to hit it clearly off.

In all fairness, there aren't many shots that way off and complete bricks. We do have our fair share that are, but most our misses just don't seem to want to drop. I saw write a few shots where we just couldn't get the roll. I'd say Ogelsby had the best "shooter's touch" so far, but I'd be quite shocked if we don't shoot better than this for the majority of our games.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I expect our shots to start falling soon here and these games won't look so ugly.

Here's a thought... a team that has little to no dribble penetration will never have great shot selection.

It's tough to get good shots when you can't get to the basket and you are forced to shoot from outside.

With that said, I was suprised at how many looks that we got from in close but still missed.

For these reasons, I wasn't upset with shot selection.

You sticking by your original post does not make it any less wrong. We missed many more good looks than we took contested ones.

Yes, add that to the fact that they are mostly bad passers and you don't get good looks.

Any time our "shooters" and thats using the term loosely, get open threes they need to pull the trigger regardless of shot clock.

I think everyone is right here. We do seem to get decent looks early in games, but our "shooters" (defined loosely per above post) can't make them. Then panic sets in, guys start pressing or McCaffrey lights them up for not shooting and it becomes this circus act of bad passing + bad shot selection + no rhythm.
