SHOOTING WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE

Talk about defense turnovers and rebounding all you want , but with this team we will go as far as our shooting will take us. We are talented and will make the tournament. We do a lot of things well, but the name of the game is shooting (as it is with most teams)
Marble was 81% from the free throw line last year and 65% this year. Gessel 80% last year and 65 % this year. If that continues we will lose some close games that we could have won (see Iowa State).
Couple that with three point shooting and you have the difference from being a one and done to a team that could make a decent run in the tournament. We really need a couple of guys to step up and hit some threes.

Obviously important for this year but we need to make some waves as I think next year is going to be a critical recruiting year if Fran is going to build a lasting program

Here are some guys that can hit some threes...season averages.

Marble 37.5%
Uthoff 52.2%
McCabe 34.0%
Gesell 34.1%
Oglesby 57.1%
Clemmons 46.2%

McCabe and Gesell aren't spectacular but I'm happy with 33.3% or better. So 6 of the players in our current 10 man rotation are shooting at least 34.0%. We have 2 guys over 50% and the guy (Marble) taking the most 3 point shots at 37.5%. As a TEAM we're at 37.6%. We aren't going to lose any game because of 3 point shooting if we hit 37.6% IMO. The 2 for 10 last game was the exception...certainly not the rule. No worries!

But the guy is pretty much right. If we shoot well from the 3 and the line we could make a deep run. If not we wont, I do belive it is a important year or recruiting

I'm just saying that using the larger sample size of the entire season we are shooting well from 3. A bad shooting night will knock pretty much any team from the NCAA Tournament. It's nice to have 6 options. Some teams only have a couple.

The three point shooting in my opinion has been much better and IMO a pleasant surprise. What amazes me is the free throw shooting. I figured as well as we shot last season the rule changes would definitely benefit us, however now my concern is missing the freebies and empty possessions as a result. I really thought Devyn would have snapped out of it by now, but now I'm simply not sure.

Marble was 5-6 against Michigan...hope that trend continues.

All of what you mentioned is important to winning games. Iowa shot well enough to win at Michigan (3-point shooting aside of 20%). But Michigan made just 8-27 3-pointers. The difference in the game was Iowa turned it over on 21% of its possessions, while Michigan turned it over on 15% of theirs. Those extra possessions were the difference.

In conference play, Marble is hitting 52% of his 3's, Oglesby 50% and Uthoff 50%. Those percentages are not sustainable, but Gesell and McCabe will likely see their % come up. Iowa is shooting 37.7% on 3's in conference play. If Iowa gets through 18 games still shooting that percent, the team will have won a lot of games.

Iowa lost to Michigan by failing to take care of little things and Michigan has a very hot player right now (Stauskas). He won't play at that level for another month-plus. Iowa just needs to take care of business Saturday at Northwestern and set up a big home game with MSU.

I don't know the stats, but my gut tells me that although the 3 point shooting percentages are pretty darn good, we are not getting the number of open three's that some of the other good shooting teams are finding. Open three's in transition and some improvement in the half court offense would be a big plus for the Hawks. If anyone has some stats that would address my thoughts, it would be greatly appreciated.

As far as outside shooting is concerned, the biggest egg dropped @MI was by Aaron going 0/3 from 3pt. He hits a couple of those and it's a lot closer and we have more opportunities to make plays to win.

As this season progresses we'll need either Uthoff or Gesell to become a reliable 3rd scoring option to reach our potential. I say this because the strategy vs IA going forward is obviously going to be to take Marble out of the game. When that happens, we'll need someone else to create and JU and MG are the most likely guys. White and Basabe doing it at their positions kept us close but weren't enough @MI and so probably won't be enough vs most rated opponents as we get later in the season.

This was a road game...big difference between a home game and a road game. Michigan State is the only (currently) rated team we will have to face on the road and we all know that's a probable loss. Most teams' supporting cast...including ours...play much better on the home court.

There's no reason to be timid on the road, and I gathered after watching that game we were a little, maybe fatigued, or whatever, but regarding shooting, you take what the defense gives you, and the 3 wasn't a viable option.....pounding the ball inside was, and it was all game, I thought....oh well onto N'western...

Missed free throws cost us some games. Used to be able to rely on Gesell, Marble and White at crunch time. Now only Aaron can be relied upon. At Iowa State, a poster said that the noise was so loud when Mike G missed two free throws at the end on the game, he thought he was going to burst an eardrum. He and another poster said that it was the loudest event they had ever attended.....

Not going to blame Mike on that one. It did hurt but the team lost the game....

I think we will be alright with the threes if were come close to our average. We don't seem to rely on the three. It does help to hit them like we did against Minny, but we don't necessarily depend on the three. Our game is transition, and Michigan is the only team to take us out of our game this year.....If I Remember correctly.....

I wish Uthoff and Gesell would shoot more threes, but not Aaron. He is still developing his mid-range jumpshot and three pointers.....

At Michigan Oglesby passed up an open, for a second, three and passed the ball to Aaron in the corner. Wish he would have taken the shot. Aaron can hit an occasional three, but cannot be depended on it.....

I think we need Josh to shoot more when open without hesitation, don't think about it, just launch the three.....
