Olympic gold medal winning gymnast and West Des Moines native Shawn Johnson is retiring from the sport. She had been trying to make a comeback to compete in her second Olympics, but she called it a career today, her dreaming falling just short.

so tired of hearing about her and all the other "great Iowans" that we're repeatedly told that we should love because they're from Iowa.

so what does she do now? go up to the casey's every morning and drink coffee with the other old timers?

This is a ridiculous post in so many ways. She's not fat, and I'd love to see what people look like who make such stupid posts as this.

This is the sort of mentality that leads to eating disorders in women, the BS image crap that is flat out distorted in this country that creates pressure for girls to look at certain way...nevermind that magazine covers totally air brush the normal things we all have.

I don't want to see garbage like this

What is it with people hating on others who have had success? If you want to be ticked off, be ticked off at the media for too much coverage. I just don't get this thinking.

it's definitely the media's fault. i don't dislike shawn, zach, lolo, etc. i just get tired of hearing about them constantly.

i assumed i was implying that i was tired of hearing about those people, not that i was hating on the individuals.

how doesn't it make sense? the media in the state beats us to death with how great the people who leave iowa to be successful in (insert sports, entertainment, etc. here). they get jammed down your throat so much that it drives you crazy. it's like how the national sports media created tons of tebow haters with their round the clock tebow coverage a while back.

i don't have to like someone just because they too are from iowa. and telling me that i should only makes me dislike them more.
 
i do agree that the media coverage gets annoying but i hate when any athletes career is ended by injury. but remember that those three rely on media coverage to make money (especially lolo and shawn). their sports dont really pay...instead they make money from sponsers and need the media coverage.

You can at least show respect to what she did for her sport and country. Or you can be jealous of her success, because that is what it really seems like this is instead. You don't have to like her, but what did SHE do as a person to cause you to personally dislike her? Dislike the media, not her.

yes. i'm jealous of her success.

nailed it.

i feel like i made it pretty clear in my last two posts that my issue is with how the media covers these people in the state.
