Shaq Stokes Down To 3

It's amazing to me that the Hawks are still in on a number of these guys. Just when doom and gloomers were ready to write the recruiting season off, it still appears we are in on Stokes, Hubbard, Katenda, Glover, Olaseni, and Katenda. There's still the outside chance of Carter as well.

It appears, right now anyway, Fran will fill his schollies with decent players. One of TOS indicates "Stokes Makes Grade" as the title for a pay article. Did he just qualify?
Well, I don't think there is any doubt as to whether the scholarships will be filled.......I think fans are just expressing concern about what caliber of recruits will be receiving the rides.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think you can put much stock in recruiting rankings after the top 30 or so at each position. Do you really think anyone at ESPN is breaking down the difference between the 57th-best PG and the 80th-best? My guess is that they are really throwing darts at that stage of the proceedings.

Maybe true, but from the videos I have seen, I think Washpun is quicker and a better athlete than is Stokes. Washpun is also about 2" taller... I think Stokes maybe serviceable, but I think there are better guards out there..... Eli Carter, Matt Glover and even Philip Miller look more impressive to me.

That may be one of the stupidous posts of all time. NY is not a hotbed for BB recruiting. According to you? You must be the guru of all college basketball and know every single player in the USA. Have you ever been out of your county? Have you ever been a professional evaluator of talent? Have you ever coached at the college level? Did you play basketball after middle school? Just wondering.

ESPN top 100 players from New York City:

Class of 2009: 2
Class of 2010: 1
Class of 2011: 1

Future classes are ranked in a more limited way, but for the class of 2012, there's one NYC player in the top 60, for the class of 2013, there are 0 in the top 25. There is a 100-player watch-list for the class of 2014 with one NYC guy on it.

Make of that what you will. And yes, I am the guru of all college basketball. Thanks for noticing.

If there is one position that I am confident will address, it is the guard spot. IMO, it is entirely plausible that he is looking for a pure PG who is more of a distributor / defender and a second combo / scoring guard. We really struggled to identify and close on shooters and got carved up by good drive and kick guys like, well, pretty much the entire big ten.

I also think we need to land a couple of decent east coast kids to have a shot at the next level players. We sign a kid like Stokes and he gets some PT as a freshman in a uptempo system with a couple Sports Center lobs to Basabe or May and suddenly kids take a second look at Iowa.

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer as I have faith in Fran, but Iowa fans need to get over the idea of Carter coming to Iowa. It ain't gonna happen! Pretty sure he hasn't even visited, and has no plans to in the near future. He's had 4 visits already per Rivals with another one coming soon to Rutgers.

So it is a 3 1/2 flight, Iowa goes by bus to Madison and Chicago and those are around 3 hours trips as well, but like I said before it is 9 times over a 9 week period, so while they may have two road games in a week they will probably have 2 home games the following week meaning they only have to travel like that every other week or even just once a week, not that big of a deal. It is the cost of the travel that is a big deal, not the travel itself like people are making it

I swear some of you haven't heard about this new invention called an airplane that can get you across the country in 5 hours instead of 5 days.

You don't fly much do you? Add in the time it takes to travel to the airport from the arena and get checked in.

Look at it this way. You have a 7:30 game. At about 2 1/2 hours, that takes you to 10:00 before the players get to the locker room. Getting everyone showered and taking care of the other post game issues would take a minimum of an hour. That takes it to 11:00. Drive to the airport and check in 2 hours. That means you better hope there is a flight later than midnight, or you are not getting home. 3 1/2 hours to Dallas, another half hour getting out if the airport, and it is 4:00 am before you get in the bus to drive back to campus.

I doubt he ends up in Iowa, but I think his 4 visits were from when he was in High School, he is now in a prep school and has visits left. Rutgers will be his first visit since enrolling at Brewsters.

I think the Shaq Stokes recruiting ship has sailed. He's taking a visit next weekend to TCU. Spring signing period will end around then and has no plans to visit Iowa. Think Glover will end up our PG recruit.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense. I still don't think we get him, though.

Agreed, and your being conservative in time usage. I just moved to the Dallas area recently and I would guesstimate the ride from TCU, which is on the South side of Ft. Worth, to DFW would take about 45 min. in light traffic. It wouldn't take much traffic to make it over an hour bus ride.
