Shaq Stokes Down To 3

Football is one thing, but that basketball road schedule is going to be brutal. I know it is a Texas religious school, which means they cheat (although they cheat for God, so it is okay), but man it is going to be tough for these kids have much presence in the classroom during the season.
Have to agree with you here CAAR. How the heck are those kids going to be able to go to class?

No doubt that travel schedule will be insane.

Just thinking a guy like Stokes in the heart of big east country may have a pull to play in that conference.

I guess Louisville would be their closest road game or maybe Marquette?
That would just suck..

I would guess they would do like the Pac 10, UCLA would go to the state Washington and play WSU and Washington in the same week while there.

Maybe TCU would play UCONN on Wednesday and BC on Saturday so they would not have to do 2 trips.

You guys are making way to much out of the road schedule for TCU, it is only 9 road games over 2 months. Sure it is a lot of miles, but they won't be taking a bus to road games increasing the travel time.

Will they really miss anymore classes then the kids at Iowa?

Say they have a game in NYC on a Tuesday and Iowa plays in Madison, TCU would fly out on Monday afternoon and fly home after the game and only miss Monday afternoon and Tuesday classes. Iowa would bus to Madison on a Monday afternoon and bus home after the game missing the exact same time classes are held.

It is the cost for the school that is going to be crazy by having to fly all the time, not missing classes.

The flight from Dallas to the upper east coast is 3 1/2 hours. It would take a minimum of an of an hour to get the kid's to the airport, and that would require flying private. Otherwise 2 1/2 hours. Getting off the plane and to hotel, another 2 hours. So, at minimum, we are talking a 7 hour trip, which gets you in an hour later. If they play a night game during the week, you really expect, after getting home at 2:00 AM or so that they are going to class the next day? Oh yeah, and to get back on Saturday, they will have to leave Friday morning. Beyond that, they will have to be in airplanes for 14 hours in one week.

I love this board. By the way, Stokes> Washpun by a lot.

I am not impressed with Stokes either. We should stick with the Cougill and see if he can bring another K-Wood all star with him to play PG. If not, Cougill can play PG because of his soft hands and dazzling ball rotation. He will go down as the crispest outlet passer in Iowa history.

Seriously folks, dogging a kid who played ball in NYC and got some run for Mr. Basketball is silly. Pretty sure he faced better compeition than CR Prairie, Kennedy, etc.

I agree with Burky. No comparison between Stokes and Washpun with respect to all around game IMO.

Stokes rated 4th best player in NYC this year --> not bad. Was Washpun the 4th best in Iowa?
If Fran wants him, I'll buy in. But I am curious about something. If Stokes is one of the better players in NYC, I would have expected more BigEast and Atlantic10 teams showing interest in him. Anyone have an explanation?

This is spot on. Does anyone know if Fran is still even interested in Stokes?

I read something yesterday that implied he had just qualified which might explain the lack of interested teams.

It is getting pretty late to qualify and teams, situated better than the Hawks, might not have time to wait on a guy qualifying (i.e., Phillip Miller).

I don't think New York is the recruiting hotbed some of you seem to think it is. There is exactly one player from New York City in the entire ESPN top 100. Everyone is raving about St. John's recruiting class-- they don't have a single guy from New York and only one from the tri-state area.

That's not a knock on Stokes. It's just an explanation of why/how there might not be a ton of major-college interest in one the better players in NYC.

So it is a 3 1/2 flight, Iowa goes by bus to Madison and Chicago and those are around 3 hours trips as well, but like I said before it is 9 times over a 9 week period, so while they may have two road games in a week they will probably have 2 home games the following week meaning they only have to travel like that every other week or even just once a week, not that big of a deal. It is the cost of the travel that is a big deal, not the travel itself like people are making it out to be.

And yes, they will be in class when getting home at 2:00 am, Iowa players are when they get home that late from their road trips (they aren't getting home before midnight) so why wouldn't TCU players?

They aren't missing anymore class time then someone at Iowa, and if they are it is only half a day at most.

I swear some of you haven't heard about this new invention called an airplane that can get you across the country in 5 hours instead of 5 days.

Looks like the kid as some skills. I know this is a highlight reel, but non the less he has skills. I believe in Coach Fran. I simply like the guy. Read the article about his first year and what he wants to do next year. To me that says he knows what he's doing and what he wants.

1:37 point I am guessing this is the same stokes.

What video's I have seen, he looks pretty small. He shows decent quickness, pedestrian vertical leap, he is gritty, but I don't see his game translating that well at the next level...

FWIW, according to the ESPN recruiting service, Washpun is ranked 57th best point guard and stokes is 80th... There is a reason he is lightly recruited IMO.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think you can put much stock in recruiting rankings after the top 30 or so at each position. Do you really think anyone at ESPN is breaking down the difference between the 57th-best PG and the 80th-best? My guess is that they are really throwing darts at that stage of the proceedings.

That may be one of the stupidous posts of all time. NY is not a hotbed for BB recruiting. According to you? You must be the guru of all college basketball and know every single player in the USA. Have you ever been out of your county? Have you ever been a professional evaluator of talent? Have you ever coached at the college level? Did you play basketball after middle school? Just wondering.

You are not very bright. Other than making up the word stupidous, you ask him by what authority does he claim that New York isn't the hotbed some believe it to be. Even though in the very next sentence he uses ESPN.com as his source.
