Shane DiBona out for season

Well, given the fact he has already redshirted, I would expect and hope he is a prime candidate for a medical hardship redshirt.

Well I guess that ends the Kirksey or Dibona debate. Expect some freshman LBs to see some reps (Alston and Spears)

Nielson- Hitchens

Morris- Davis

Kirksey- Poggi

When is the earliest you can ask for a medical redshirt? Is there a specific date that all medical redshirt requests are approved or denied?

I believe Poggi is already rehabbing a very significant injury and likley done for the year if memory serves...As for Dibona I liked him, I thought he played very well in spot duty last year and I was excited about him this year. Now with that said, he was probably a tick behind as a result of rhabo and a shoulder issue if memory serves....

Keep in mind there are going to be injuries in camp and throughout the season, hopefully we have less at one psotion than we did last season.

PS...Getz backs up Nielsen and in a pinch I’d guess they go Kirksey

Davis backs up Morris….

Then Kirksey/Hitchens…..

At least it isn’t OU, they lost their best defensive player, Lber Travis Lewis who was just voted the 2nd most irreplaceable behind Landry, for 8 weeks yesterday.

Will the rhabdo 13 (now 10 with Lowe, Poggi and Dibona out) be more susceptible to muscular or tissue types of injuries as a result of what happened at the beginning of the year, either due to lingering damage or weakness, or even the loss of conditioning most of the spring? Might be interesting for an Iowa sports writer to explore with medical experts both in and out of UIHC.

Just saw on the ESPN front page for NCAAFB a tweeter from Joe Schad that said Kniles Davis just left the Arky practice on a cart not putting much weight on his left leg......there are going to be injuries every where.

Hopefull they are early enuff we can build depth and reps with the replcaements.....

Always feel bad for players who have such significant injuries that it keeps them from competition for an entire season ...

Not that there's ever a good time to lose any player to injury, but if I had to pick a time I think this early in camp is the best possible scenario for getting the next man in ready to go. Hopefully he recovers and is 100% come next year.

I agree. I feel terrible for DiBona ... this year would have been a great year for him to solidify his positioning for us. However, given the injury, it's definitely a great setback to him ... AND to our depth at LB

However, at least now the "next man in" will be able to get more practice reps with the upper teamers. That will kinda force the issue when it comes to adjusting to the speed of the game.

My hunch is that Spears, Alston, and Collins might now find themselves in a position of not only getting playing time as a TR FR on special teams .... but also to see meaningful positional reps too.

Based on some of the photos of Spears, I'd say he's a candidate to play all 3 LB positions at the same time.

Dude is a beast!
