SHALL WE RANT OR SHALL WE CHEER ? (UNT)

I don't know about you but I was deeply troubled in the 1sst half. I took my portable TV out on the ledge with me.

Stanley still figuring out the long ball.

I'm very excited about #21 IKM. Just really excited about him.

UNT was 0-6 on 3rd down

Cheer for the 2nd half but injuries are concerning. Ankle or something else is bothering JJ but he's toughing through it. Just doesn't look explosive.

Cheer.
We got the win.

We got the 2nd reps (irregardless of the score but RBs only because of injuries -- and, by the way, they looked good)

We got the entire 2nd team unit to run plays before the victory formation.

After PSU throttles their cupcake, we got them over-confident coming into next week -- Upset Alert

Cheer the win.
But....
The defense can't start slow next week.
We need Wadley 100%, Butler doesn't concern me as the other two looked quicker.
Passing game still feels shaky at times.
Brian has to call a better game. We won't be able to run into Penn State's line.
We need a return threat.

Both. Fortunately, finished on a cheer. :)

I'm very pleased with the "scratch where it itches" adjustment by the coaches in the 2nd half. There has been exactly 1 season where this staff committed to a successful change - 2004. As with today, it took a few RBs going down to force their hand. I wish they would do it more often as the game flow and opponent dictate but I'll take it being forced upon them.

Let's hope they don't revert back to scripted sphincteritis next week and continue to recognize what type of OL and RB combination they have, this season.
Hint: it ain't yer typical unit that can fluidly execute the zone blocking. It's more suited to a power game, with Toren Young as the feature back.
AkW will be back and should be used in space - maybe even emphasized in the slot.
Do this and PSU will be playing from behind.

IF the D can dial it up (aka, tighten up against Barkley and find a way to not suck so bad on the back end this gives Hawks a punchers chance against their toughest physical test left on the schedule.

And cheer the new offensive coordinator.

It looks like on an overwhelming number of plays Stanley has the play in the 17-20 seconds remaining on play clock rather than around 10-12 seconds left like the last few seasons.

Doing this takes pressure off the QB and offense and puts a little more on the defense to reveal their defense.

Chrant? Sloppy tackling, too many missed tackles. Barkley is licking his lips. The real problem is no pass rush. BAD combination. This game was headed towards a rout early but some serious strange calls. Don't know what to think. One thing though is Young should be 2nd string. That is a real thunder and lighting combo I'd like to see.

This team feels like the 2009 edition - it's just the position groups are at different levels of development. They come from behind and they seem to thrive on long drives. The winning attitude is there. They make plays when they have too. And they are not getting much respect. Today felt a lot like the Halloween Indiana game. I will cheer for the Hawkeyes and my rant goes to the most bizarre officiating I have seen in a long time-at least since 2006.

I'm still optimistic for the season and maybe competing for the West but I don't feel good about matching up with PSU.

This is where I'm at. I feel like we have a good chance in every other game. I just don't see our defense slowing them down and I highly doubt our offense can keep up. Jewell has to be hurt. He looked so slow out there with his closing speed.

One thing I have hope for is remembering downright mediocre to average Iowa teams giving PSU a game and even winning.

Rant. We didn't punch in that last TD. Could've covered the spread.
Very disappointing. Let Young try to get that TD for his previous runs. You should care more about your players having fun than about hurting the opposing coach's feelings.

I've read this a couple of times and I can't tell if I agree or disagree with you. My take on the 2nd half was this...once Butler went down, I think the "schincteritis" took hold. I did an unofficial, unscientific count and of the 43 plays we ran in the 2nd half, 35 of them were running plays. Thankfully, we must have worn them down because the running game that was getting stuffed in the first half started to find some cracks in the second. It didn't look like UNT was doing anything different...they still had 9 guys within the box within 7 yards of the LOS. It's just that those small, quick guys up front were slowing down in the heat and from our fellas leaning on them all game, especially in the 2nd half when they struggled to get us off the field. So from the "scratch where it itches" perspective, I still think we were trying to slam the square peg into the round hole...it's just that we had earned our success by beating them up. So maybe it was scratching where it itched? Perhaps you see my dilemma... :)

Rant - I'd love to be able to go back and watch (but probably won't have time) but not only did Stanley struggle once again with the deep balls, he also made some very questionable decisions on some quick game throws. 2 of them stand out...incidentally, the first is the TD to Hockenson (sen?). He was actually intending that for ISM on the follow route and had it gotten through the LOS without being tipped, it probably would have been 6 the other way. In the 3rd quarter there was another similar pass where it was a good thing it got tipped away...the details are escaping me. I remember posting in the game thread that it was another poor read. I'd love to be able to look at some All-22 type footage of this game to see what UNT was doing in the secondary...unfortunately other than Fant, I'm not sure we have any WR's that really scare anyone. I think that's part of the reason we've seen 8 and sometimes 9 man boxes with our personnel groupings.

Cheer - Toren Young and IKM...nicely done. After Butler went out (not sure about anyone else, but my first thought was shades of Greg Garmon coming off the field with his elbow...ick), I posted that I was most concerned about our gameplan with regard to the ability to protect Stanley with young guys in there on pass plays. These two just alleviated any concern I had because they ran hard and eliminated the need to throw the ball (see above 35 of 43 rushing plays stat). Toren Young is a handful and IKM was very sudden and surprisingly powerful...both of them took a couple hits they could have been lower on, but they impressed me with their combination of burst, power, and vision.

Once the beer and nerves wore off I can cheer the win. The Easley fumble was a fluke as was the wadley stuff. So the first half was just bizzare and I am throwing it away as a fluke.

Iowa dominated the second half. I haven't seen official stats but I'm pretty sure north Texas only had 50 yards of offense in the second half. NT was also 0/6 on third down. Meanwhile Iowa dominated the time of possession and was 4 for 5 on 4th down.

It doesnt seem like it and it sounds crazy but all the stats say that Iowa dominated that game

Those were different PSU teams.

Very different. this is the most talent that program has had since the mid 1990s. And since the KF era began Iowa's wins came against the following PSU teams:

2000: PSU was 5-7 Iowa was probably a better team at that point of the year, at least their equal
2001: PSU went 5-6 Iowa was a better team
2002: PSU was good, 9-4 but Iowa was awesome
2003: PSU 3-9, iowa much better
2004: PSU 4-7 see 2003
2008: PSU 11-2, best lion team KF has beaten, only time a lesser Iowa team beat a better PSU team but you make a strong argument Iowa had the more talented team
2009: 11-2 but like 2008, Iowa was tougher and more talented
2010: PSU 7-6

The pattern here is pretty clear. When Iowa is better than PSU, they beat them. Mediocre Iowa teams have beaten PSU but only when PSU has been less than mediocre. PSU isn't even in the same universe as mediocre now
