Shaka is too Smart

...to go to the Gophers.

Just heard an interview with the VCU play-by-play guy on Twin Cities sports radio. Despite his relationship with Norwood Teague (Gopher AD and former VCU AD who hired Shaka) he's a long shot..at best...for Minnesota.

Shaka wants to build his own thing at VCU, they're in the process of facility upgrades, and by this time tomorrow night...he'll likely have a sweetened deal there. VCU is no tiny school...it's the largest public university in Virginia (30,000 enrollment). And he's still young...35. He'll have plenty of shots at better jobs if he wants it.

My money says...the Gophers end up with Flip Saunders.

He does have a pretty good thing going at VCU and a decent team returning next season. I think it would take a contract in excess of 3 million per year to lure him away.

I've heard 7 years and $21 million. This is right at your threshold...so 50-50?

For a UCLA...perhaps. But not Minnesota. Williams Arena is a lovable old barn to the locals...but to anyone coming in from outside... it's a dump. And there's no new arena on the horizon. They're struggling to get a practice facility.

You realize they were paying Tubby almost 2 million per year right?

^ Sorry, only realized after posting this is not what you guys were talking about. :(

Why would Smart take a step down? The only thing he would gain is a little more money. If that is all he is about, then take the Goof job, have your mediocre team annually. If I were him, I wouldn't touch da Goof job with a 10 ft pole. Run, don't walk, away.
