Seau had CTE

How is the fact that players didn't know about this surprising? Doctors are just now learning about CTE and you're saying that players should have already known about it years before? Give me a break.

CTE isn't really what I'm talking about. If they are just learning about it, how is the NFL supposed to know? The NFL knew before doctors did?

there's pretty good evidence that the NFL knew and tried to hide some of this info on the long term stuff. wasn't until very recently that the NFL even agreed that this stuff is legit, they denied the existence of things like CTE for a long time. if the NFLPA and such have a legit gripe, it is on those grounds. now that the info is out, it is more on the players to know and/or make those decisions.

This. While the NFL isn't necessarily hiding anything the fact is that the thousands of individauls who've played the game and the hundreds of thousands that played highschool football and college ball growing up may have seen the "big picture" that concussions happen, but not realized the severity and life altering effects that they can have on a person. Let's be honest, years ago a player getting knocked out during the course of a play was something that made the crowd errupt and was "awesome", as spectators and players we viewed it as entertainment and put little thought into how serious concussions and head injuries were.

Then what the hell is boxing thinking? Look, you go into this knowing what the consequences are, right? Or was the NFL hidin the fact that their employees could get hurt and suffer long term damages from football?

I don't know that we've always known that football has these serious long term consequences (damage to the brain). Our knowledge on this is evolving. The NFL probably needs to adapt to this unfolding story.

It worries me that they're doing PR commercials about NFL safety. Reminds me of BP doing commercials about the environment.

This quote (from the story) says a lot:
He joins a list of several dozen football players who were found to have CTE. Boston University's center for study of the disease reported last month that 34 former pro players and nine who played only college football suffered from CTE.

This is quite significant.

But this is sort of the point. We didnt know about the CTE type stuff until recently. You can't tell me the NFL knew before the doctors. I just don't see that. The NFL is not the only place they play football.

The sport would have to be totally different if any of this were to stop completely.

Maybe. You might. Kinda like smoking, almost. You now know all the risks and you can choose to do it or not. Well, not exactly the same, but ya know.

Granted I only played 2A ball in Iowa, but there wasn't enough hard hitting in HS football to really do much damage to ppl. I only saw about 2 concussions in 4 years. Translate that to big-time Texas HS football, and you will see some hitting.

I just don't know how they are going to make the game safe enough for this whole problem to go away.

Maybe you only saw 2 concussions in 4 years, but many happen without knowing. And it's not only concussions, but asymptomatic subconcussive hits to the head.

Yeah, absolutely could be the case. It's just more extensive when it hits levels like the NFL, like you know. The big hits are fewer and far between the lower you get.
