Season Ticket Holder Survey Podcast

Please, please, please, Jon....you and Deace have got to devote at least 30 minutes to this. This has to rank up there with one of the most desperate and embarrassing things I've ever seen an AD and athletic department do in order to preemptively strike before the S hits the fan come the last 1/4 of the season.

I think that the podcast and the article lacked context, i.e., a response from the athletic department.

I read a tweet today that averred that the survey was weird and unnecessary. Frankly I don't think it's weird to try and understand what your customer is thinking and it's necessary because you don't know what you don't know. Take it (or not) from someone who spent 35+ years in sales/marketing; survey answers can be surprising and are absolutely necessary if you're trying to figure out when and where to invest millions of dollars.

If you're the AD it's your job to know what's going on without some stupid survey. If you live in the clouds and don't come down to earth then your gonna be out of touch. Problem is he wants to keep the big investors happy(small group)not realizing all the other ones add up to a lot more than he thought.

Generally speaking, you are right and knowledge is power and customer opinions can surprise. However, in the context of a Big 10 athletic department, winning, graduating student athletes and doing it the right way (i.e. within rules/laws/guidelines/etc.) should be a given. There is no need to "rate" them and poll them against each other to attempt a priority list. It is a waste of money.

In the context of the athletic department yes it should be a given. But what if the fans have a different opinion?

SoMH, an ESecPN writer weighed in and made a good point. Why should "how do the fans rate each three" even matter to an athletic department. No AD is going to come under fire for winning too much, graduating too many student athletes and having a program that is never in trouble with any governing bodies, agencies or law enforcement. For these 3 topics, a Big 10 athletic department should simply do all it can to excel at all 3 with equal fervor and priority.

Is this, is is this not, the first in series of surveys? I thought I read that when I filled out the first? one, but could be mistaken. If I am right, I would like to wait to see where this goes before I pass judgement. Help?

This survey provides Barta with some (weak) ammunition when KF doesn't get us anywhere near a BIG title. Every person that filled out that survey is going to put Graduating players and Do it the right way, as priorities over winning. Even if they don't really feel that way. That allows him to point to KF and say "I gave you what you wanted".
Like the guy that wrote the article. I don't see much value in it. Those 3 questions are all examples of high priorities in any AD.
Barta's a clown.

My guess is he's trying to sell himself to the new President that's eventually hired. As soon as the new President is hired and has an email address.....he/she will be getting the past 10 season's Director's Cup rankings, from me. That's how much I want to see Barta gone.

It is truly a monkey court running the show in the U of I. You just can't make this stuff up. Should have left Barta in Wyoming.

I think gaining insight to what a customer is thinking is important in and of itself. There may be no other reason for it although I doubt it. But I wasn't in on the meetings prior to the launch of this survey so I don't know how this information is to be used. And neither does the writer.

Duh.

And who is saying that isn't the case now or once the survey is completed? I'm frustrated by the knee jerk reactions to this by the media. Here it is Sunday AM and I have yet to read a tweet, blog or column about this where writer contacted the AD and asked for a comment. It may well be this is one spectacular FUBAR by the AD (we all remember "Let's get Mad again") but until them I'm going to chalk this up to a nothing that became a something because it's July and this is no football on TV.

It's been real Arvada, but I'm done with this topic. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Knee jerk reaction? Me thinks you don't understand the term.
Knee jerk reaction:
1. an immediate unthinking emotional reaction produced by an event or statement..

Everything I've read in the media has been spot on, reasoned criticism, including most of what I've read here.. They/We read the survey, considered its content, timing and subtle underlying message and realize that it's yet one more embarrassment constructed under Gary Barta. The fact that so many outside of Hawkeye circles (as in, not emotionally tied to the topic) come to the same conclusion should confirm that for you.

I'd suggest the "knee jerk" part is the immediate denial by some of any evidence (and there's plenty)..that both Ferentz and Barta have lost it. Wake up, we have a clown running our athletic department and a has-been running our football program. Both need to go.

You missed his point of "knee-jerk": NONE of those commenting/laughing/blustering have contacted the AD or Athletic Department for ANY kind of statement/clarification/etc.

In other words, numerous media hacks got "Trumped"...

I understand, fair point.

But do we know that they haven't tried to contact them? I'd guess that some have tried. Barta may very well be keeping them at arms length knowing how well this has gone over.

Don't know for certain, but if they DID try, and got no response, I'd guess we'd hear that.
