Season Prediction 2018

8-4 regular season without talking injuries for the hawks or opponents. The first game, the suspension game, is iffy as I was really thinking before all that the hawks would win by 7-10.

Hate to say it but until the hawks show they can handle wisky's Dee I see losses to Wisky and PSU. Then there will be two games the hawks maybe should have won but didnt. I would think they would be favored at the start of the season in about every game except the two I mentioned above. If they play to form I would say 10-2 but they dont often play to form.

Yes very true. It all depends on which Hawkeye team shows up. But in the end we will have a lot more great Hawkeye memories!

7 -5 plus a bowl game victory. Not nearly enough depth on the O - line and not enough size outside the starting tackles. With a few injuries they could struggle big time. Stanley still needs time in the pocket as he is not very mobile. Inconsistent line play as well as inconsistent playcalling will be an ongoing frustration. BF may be better suited as a HC someday vs OC. Is that why they brought in Polasek? Does KF retire in 2-3 years??

I digress. Our defense will pleasantly surprise us. Some young studs in the secondary and LB's will be stout by season's end. Parker and Morgan are two of the most underrated coaches in college football. Period. I feel good with those guys on staff. Offense? Not so much.

".....not enough size outside the starting tackles".
The backups are over 300. (Paulsen's at 305?) Which is about standard in the Ferentz years. Guards are over 300. Really can't go that much bigger on the guards. Overall size wise, the offensive line is probably the largest Iowa has had. Iowa has 2 count them, 2-320 pound tackles. Overall I think the line lacks experience. But it's true we can never have enough.

We have had individual tackles that size but not the bookends we have currently so you are correct about that. I disagree about the largest line ever. I have stood next to the Paulsen's and I have a hard time believing their listed size which would make them Brandon Scherrf size basically. And is it unfair to claim they haven't developed like we hoped they would have by now?

But my main point is that our backups at the two most critical positions on the line (LT ans C) are undersized redshirt freshman. 280 and 270 lbs. They are still developing obviously.

As a matter of fact, out of the 20 offensive lineman on the roster, 12 are Freshman or RS Freshman who are very undersized still. It is imperative that are O Line stays healthy. How often does that happen? And Reese Morgan isn't coaching them up anymore.

So here we are two weeks out from opening day! Maybe I missed the prediction thread but anyway here's my WAG(wild ass guess).

Iowa has a lot of potential this year. A excellent QB, two very good TE's, an up WR corps with Smith Marsette and Easley. Big offensive line, running backs looking to start their legacies. Should be a great offensive year.

Defensive line was good last year, expect them to be the bedrock of this defense. Linebackers. They may be great, but they shouldn't be a drag on the defense either. Defensive backs will get better as the year goes on.

1. Northern Illinois. Good pass rusher. Iowa's starting tackles suspended. Iowa still wins. 31-17
2. Iowa State. Doesn't matter if Iowa State is good or bad this year. Still a dogfight. Iowa returns suspended players. Going to be a close one. Iowa wins by a FG. 31-28
3. Northern Iowa. Not enough for Iowa. Iowa wins a tune up game before Wisconsin. 42-10
4. Wisconsin. Iowa wins this game, they can make another 12-0 run. But a playoff bound Wisconsin coming to town is looking to spoil that thought. Iowa drops one. 31-21.
5. Minnesota. Freshman QB? Young. Not enough for Iowa. Iowa wins 42-13
6. Indiana. Not enough talent. 42-28
7. Maryland. Too many off the field problems. Homecoming for the Hawkeyes. Iowa wins 45-21
8. Penn State. Iowa's second game against a B10 contender. In Happy Valley. Penn State may not be as strong as last year but...Iowa loses. 27-21
9. Purdue. Defense from last year is gone. Offense still potent. Don't expect Iowa to get out played, out coached this year. Iowa wins. 41-27
10. Northwestern. Northwestern's hopes got a cool down at the B10 media event when it was disclosed Thorson might not be ready for a few games in. Limit Thorson Iowa wins. 31-24
11. Illinois. Young. Very young. Iowa wins. 43-14
12. Nebraska. Going to be tough for Nebraska to break that 3 game Iowa winning streak in Kinnick. Iowa wins. 37-17

I have Iowa 10-2. But as we know Iowa seems to win a game they shouldn't etc. So we will see! Go Hawks!

Well that would be a very nice season. Look at all those points !! Hard to believe that Kirk would allow his team to score so many points - 30+ points almost every week ! That might be worth watching.

I'll go with 14-0................ wait that's stupid 13-1

seriously

I'm 90% sure Iowa wins 7 or 8 games this year.

Are you from Clinton?

The season hinges on the ISU game. Iowa wins that, they are setup for a night game vs WI maybe w GameDay there. They lose that game, it could unravel. We know how the Hawks like top 5 teams in Kinnick especially at night!

Iowa hasn’t had athletic enough OTs with experience to handle WIs 3-4 defense since they installed it...until now. I’d expect Stanley to have more time to throw this year. His TE/WR pass catchers are essentially all back. Win that game and it’s off to the races. Lose and they could still have a successful season.

If our LBs are decent and the o-line is good, 10-2 and ranked 12th or so by the end of the year. If the LBs get torched and the o-line is average or worse, 6-6. They will be a function of each other because if the o-line sucks, the LBs will spend more time on the field and if the LBs suck the defense will never get off the field and the o-line will face a ton of blitzes as our run game gets taken away by the 3rd quarter - it will be one of those years of an infinite loop of incompetence that feeds off itself. This team will either be purely average or a little above average (which will translate into a good record with our schedule). Nothing in between.
