Sean Keeler takes us gloaters to task

The Ragister has to do everything it can to hang on to the few subscribers (and smaller market) they have.

Years ago a great state-wide newspaper was taken over and the decision was made to focus on the immediate area around Des Moines. (I hesitate to use the term "golden triangle") I'm not sure the reduction in quality journalism was an intentional choice...but that happened too. So they have to ride that horse.

Perhaps the Des Moines Register shouldn't have hitched its wagons to the Des Moines area and the clowns...hmmm.

Perhaps he should have mentioned that IF the roles were reversed, clown fans would be much worse...much much worse. Remember when Paul Clark about 2 years ago talked about how ISU should be putting their foot on Iowa's throat when Iowa was having troubles off the field and ISU should be taking advantage of Iowa's troubles. Clown fans would like nothing more than to see Iowa fall on hard times...very hard times...very very hard times.

So, as the saying goes...Better them than us Sean. Maybe the Des Moines Register will go down the drain with the clowns.

The rag took a dive when it became politcally biased to an extreme. Totally alienated a who chunk of iowans.

I've posted this before, but I was well & truly shocked when I picked up a Des Moines Register circa 2003 after a 15-year hiatus. Unrecognizable - weak sports section, amateurish opinion columns, a markedly liberal point of view, and even poor copyediting, from a paper that had been recognized nationally for fairness, balance and quality.

Talk about trying to bayonet the wounded after the battle is over. Nice try Sean -- I bet the ISU people wonder why you were not advocating befor ethe calamity!!

Still this just means recruiting gets easier!

Keeler: There's no easy fix for Iowa State's sinking ship | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register

Man, what a stupid column by Keeler. And normally I like his stuff. I have seen relatively little "snickering" from Hawkeye fans on this board, and in general, about Iowa State's situation. The only posts I've seen on this site regarding ISU are links to their own fan site with Clone fans complaining about the hand they've been dealt.

Can you imagine if the situation were reversed? ISU fans would be having an absolute heyday if the Big 10 were crumbling. Obviously this is a biased opinion, but I feel like Hawk fans have been pretty classy about the whole thing so far

It really would not have mattered if Iowa had voted against Nebraska coming into the Big Ten. It only took 8 "yes" votes.

Iowa State cannot blame Iowa for anything. Nebraska was never comfortable in the Big 12 and they certainly cannot trust arrogant Texas.

This was inevitable. Iowa State should join the WAC or the Mountain West. Now.

If I were Paul Rhoads I would be using this "No one wants you" talk for motivation this coming year in football...never know could light some fire for them and have a good season?

Iowa State would do just fine as an independent in wrestling. They'd still be able to schedule Iowa, UNI, Nebby, Minny, the Okies, etc. The Big 12 doesn't make any difference for them in wrestling.

College basketball -- men's and women's -- is a much more wide-open playing field thanks to the tournament and the low price of admission. Imagine ISU in the MVC. That's a lot of good hoops competition AND an easier road to the tourney. Would they rather keep losing to Kansas every year? Or would they rather secure a mid-major auto-bid and beat Kansas in the tourney? (Couldn't resist...)

Things are sketchier in football, of course, but the Clones haven't exactly set the world on fire with their gridiron prowess. Maybe they should be a mid-major. They could be a perennial winner in the MAC, and continue their impressive string of who-cares bowl games.

But then again, maybe the MWC adds all the Big 12 leftovers they can get their hands on as they lobby the BCS for an automatic bid. Then ISU could find itself in a new BCS conference. One where they actually might have a chance at winning a championship.

Why should it be such a big deal to have two BCS schools in Iowa? So that we can have a program comparable to Mississippi State?

I guess what I'm saying is ... I don't see the sky falling on ISU yet.

The point is that being in a BCS conference should provide dollars to the state. Unless you really want Ames and the Ames area to go through a depression, the income from a BCS conference is good for the state. UofI gets $20+ million, ISU current gets around $10 million, and most non-Big XII options currently avaialable to ISU look to be $3 million or less. That is a huge drop in financial influx to the state.

Actually the Register has moved to the right. Hence, the reason is sucks...

The Rag's fate was sealed when the it was sold by the Cowles family to the Gannett Corp. After that the fall was swift and complete.

Relatively little snickering? Are you freaking kidding me?? The amount of happiness shown on this board over ISU's situation is scary. If ISU doesn't end up in a BCS conference, it is a bad thing for the state of Iowa.

That remains to be seen, and there is better chance than not that ISU ends up in a better position when this is all over than they're in right now.

I am not sure I agree that ISU dropping down hurts the state of Iowa. Isu loses 10-15M in Athletic dept revenue but Iowa could easily pick this up by having a more consistent level of success due to the improved recruiting. While ISU will have less money coming in the door the real money maker for ISU remains research money and that isn't going away any time soon.

You nailed it. The Iowa City Press Citizen and the Des Moines Register were both Purchased by Gannett and Have never been the same since. The are pretty much the same paper as you will see articles from the Press Citizen in the Des Moines Register and vice versa. Gannett is a corporate raider. They buy small market newspapers and pretty much dismantle them. They cut staff, and sell of the equipment. They fired half the staff at the PC. Now they print the paper in Des Moines so they are always behind in the news coverage. They tried to get Johnson County to buy the Press Citizen building and use it for a new jail. They wanted something like 2 and a half million for the property. It's only a matter of time before they go under.

You're the first to say what I've been thinking. I look for ISU to come out more fired up than ever this year in Iowa City. We better be ready.

Iowa gains barely anything in recruiting if ISU drops a level. You don't need to be in a BCS conference in basketball to be successful. I'm probably missing someone, but Jason Scales was the last high caliber recruit in football that chose ISU over Iowa.
