Scott Strohmeier - IWCC Reivers

This is becoming a nice pipeline for players as there seem to be a couple a year that could move up to D-1 football. Head coach Scott Strohmeier has done a terrific job at Iowa Western and has had A LOT of success in a short time. You really have to wonder when he is going to move on.

I researched them a bit and had no idea that he has been Western Iowa's only coach. They've only been a football program for a mere 9 years and this will be their 10th season. Their inaugural season was in 2009. In the Reivers inaugural season, they went a respectable 5-4. Anytime you can go over .500 in a first season is good. In the other 8 years, the ONLY time they lost more than 2 games was in 2016 when they went 6-6. Every other year ended with only 1 or 2 losses and resulting in regional champions. The Reivers went 12-0 in 2012 and was crowned the NJCAA National Champion, beating junior college juggernaut #2 Butler Comm College 27-7, this in only their 4th season of existence.

I was shocked they've only been around 9 seasons and the success they have had. Again, I wonder what the future holds for this young coach.

ISU looked at him pretty hard under Rhoads. I think they were looking at bringing him in as an OC.

I've spoken to coach Strohmeier several times, he is a close friend of my brothers. Tremendous guy, great coach - and don't think for a second he hasn't been offered several position coaching jobs at the P5 level. He's very comfortable where he is, his brother gets to work on his staff and had a lot of roots laid with his family in the Council Bluffs community. That said, I think the right spot at a smaller school with him being the HC will be his next step. He's taken IWCC about as far as it will go and it's now just a machine.

IWCC is what Kirkwood is to baseball. It's a stepping stone to higher level ball and a place for kids who can't hack P5 academics to get their shit together before going D-1.

I like the concept because coaches get a better vetting process on recruits. 16 and 17 year old high schoolers have a lot of work ahead of them and it's pretty tough to be able to predict whether they'll pan out or not.

The success of that program that fast is unheard of, even at the CC level. Hell, he only had one year to recruit and fill his first roster, so a 5-4 record shows how much he was able to coach these players up. It proves his skill as a coach.

It's crazy - his first 2 seasons, he was mowing a golf course here in town for extra income. I think IWCC pays him pretty well because the FB program has almost tripled their enrollment during that time and puts a lot of eyeballs on the school. He deals daily with the likes of KF, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, the dipshit at ISU - one day we went to lunch with him and he had just met with Charlie Weis

Yea, I realize what it is. It's a stepping stone or last ditch chance for some. But, it is still impressive how fast he's become competitive or dominant and the list of D-1 players that have come out of there already. His ability to recruit to find players that can improve upon what they have to and get them to succeed to get to the next level is terrific.

What a gig. I mean to be looked upon with high regards from these coaches and develop relationships with them.

There's a waiting list to play at IWCC now, they can be pretty selective on what they take on

Actually it's a good place for late developers more than grades. Those w/o grades aren't likely to be successful later either. Plus a lot of kids get overlooked.

I didn't mean my post to shine a negative light on it. I just meant that because they've gotten so good, it's turned the program into sort of a D-1 prep school. It's good for the goose and the gander. Their recruiting is almost automatic and they clean house in their own conference, and programs like Iowa get to "test drive" someone they think might fit.

Well he's put himself in a great and envious position that's for sure. I love hearing about coaches that are more 'self made'. Most of the HCs and assistants at the higher levels all got their foots in the door based on 'who they knew' more than anything. (or who he was related to in Zac Smiths case).
So this is awesome and I hope however he chooses to climb the ladder if he even wants to it makes him happy. Some guys at that level are fortunate enough to set down roots. Not many but the ball is in his court if he wants to anyway.
