Schwartz: Time to Shelve Iowa-Iowa State Football

Iowa is the only Big Ten member stuck with playing the same P5 member of another conference year after year. Indiana nor Purdue do not play Ball State simply because they are in the same state. Ohio State does not play other state schools within Ohio's border.
I will give you another reason to end the series. In five years there will be only 4 power conferences and ISU will not be a member of one of the four. Under Big Ten scheduling Iowa will have to find a P4 opponent.
Expansion to a 10 conference game schedule remains a Big Ten option. So does scheduling conference games in the second and third weeks of a season. Agreeing to extend the series places too many restrictions not only for Iowa and the conference.

The whole notion that Iowa HAS to play 7 home games needs to be challenged better than these weak columnists do. Somebody needs to do their homework and present the evidence it is justified.

Because I can just as easily say, with no evidence, that Iowa can make more more money from tv rights, playing another P5 team every year, and playing an average of 6.5 home games per year.

Because the people who go to the home games want more games and not less home games.

I'm tired of the ISU series. If we win we get credit for beating one of the wortst, if not the worst teams in college football. If we lose the media mentions it all year and cyfans have their superbowl which makes their season a success. It's time we stopped subsidizing the clowns.

Like when we lost to NDSU last season and the nation took notice???

I don't think either team's administration will allow them to cancel this game. Its a guaranteed early season sellout every single year. On top of that you'd have the pressure of local businesses (hotels, restaurants, clothing, etc) and corporate sponsors (hy-vee, Iowa Corn Growers) hammering the politicians to pressure the schools into continuing the "rivarly".

I hate this game, its not great for Iowa football, but it is good for the state. Theres really no denying that.

With all the BTN money coming in, the excuse that Iowa "needs" 7 home games is ridiculous.

And it is the only home game when an extra 25,000 people show up that don't even go into the game.

I would take one fewer home game every other year to get a big-name opponent into Kinnick. But that's just me...

Let's see how they handle Penn State and Ohio State at home this season and go from there. The away game at Penn State was embarrassing. I am sure that if we can't beat NDSU at home for sure we could beat LSU in Kinnick.

I'm guessing you meant we couldn't beat LSU at home because we lost to NDSU at home as well. Not a logical argument as each week it becomes a different contest with different dynamics. I would say though that if we can beat Michigan at home, we would have a decent chance to beat an LSU at Kinnick as well.

How about when we would play them at Death Valley? And do you suppose their 4 and 5 star players would be a little more ready in week 1 or 2 of the year than Iowa's players? Because let's recognize that we aren't playing a game like this 10 games in. And Les Miles is no longer at LSU so someone likely a little better with their talent is moving in.

We sound like ISU fans when we say the NDSU loss was a fluke loss.

I would guess if Iowa did do this, they would want to play the extra P5 team 1 year, then skip a year and play 2 cupcakes, then play tbe same P5 again the next year. So they would want to play at the OOC P5 school in years Iowa has 5 home conference games, then play the 2 cupcakes the years that Iowa has 4 conference home games. Of course that means 1 of those years, Iowa would have 2 road games early (ISU and other P5 school) in the non-conference.
