HN columnist David Schwartz writes about Kirk Ferentz embarking on the 2017 season as the longest-tenured coach in major college football:

Nicely written. I'm one who has been frustrated at times with Kirk and company. I think we as Iowa fans want a football title so bad and to be relevant consistently on the national title level so bad that we can't see how much respect he gets nationally. He's viewed not as the little engine that could but as the little engine that has done pretty damn good.... I think he represents Iowa pretty well. He may not be from Iowa, but he sure fits in. I've spent almost half my life now away from Iowa, and to me he's as Iowa as pigs and wrasslin.

Maybe I'm seeing it as glass half full instead of half empty, but Kirk is alright. Please delete that quote from the records if we lose to Wyoming and Iowa State this year. And fire his ass.

Both Hayden and Ferentz, I think you could say, much of their longevity came as a result of the timing of their very good teams. Just when you would think they were headed in the wrong direction, BOOM, here comes a 10-11 win team pumping everyone, and CONTRACTS, back up again.

Once huge point is that they would win enough to keep fans in the stands most years. Iowa's fan following most likely helped retain them, even during some down years. This doesn't happen at all places, especially states/cities that have other pro sports vying for fan's $$. See Minneapolis/St. Paul and the Gophers.

The Hayden and Ferentz are very likeable and represent the university well. Is there any other school that only had 2 back-to-back coaches in 39 yrs? That is unheard of this day in age. I wish this stat would be mentioned more on the sports stations or a segment from BTN done on it or something.

Two reasons why Iowa has had only 2 coaches in 39 yrs.
1) Fan support/following for the team - So, if some fans wanted Ferentz gone, they can blame themselves to a point
2) The university's loyality to the coach and to let them fight thru the bad years

The fact that they were both pretty good coaches helped too. Ferentz's coaching style drives me nuts but his results aren't quite bad enough to ever deserve firing. And like you said, whenever he gets close, he somehow pulls a great season out of nowhere.
