Schwartz: A.J. Epenesa and Separation Anxiety

First off I am a die hard hawk fan and have been for 60 years. Could not wait for radio play by play in autumns throughout the 60s and 70s and listened through the bad years. Really got into it in 1958 so I remember some early great years. I am a pragmatist as I grew older though and I realize the players are there for only 4-5 years.

I suppose your article does speak to some fans who cant handle players leaving but those fans must have a strange view on life, maybe they dont think they will ever die either. So to me the thesis of your article is a bit hyperbolic.

I enjoy senior day in college sports as we get to celebrate watching these athletes play and give them a huge standing ovation. I also like games where younger 2nd and 3rd teamers get to play so we get to see the future. I celebrate the change in the roster and think it is neat to see new players grow and play and mesh into a team.

I agree with you that the mood can be changed for days by the outcomes of games and I challenge any big hawk fan right now to say they wont feel awesome if the hawks beat both UNI and Wisky to move to 4-0 and probably a ranking about 17.

Will he go to the NFL having never started at Iowa?
DE at Iowa this year is a committee. More than two players of similar talent levels each having a certain niche job that they rotate in for. "Starter" doesn't apply and isn't relevant.

To fans it doesnt. To us its a nice problem.

For some reason I just can't read the drivel he writes. He lost me in the 2nd paragraph with "Each fall Saturday, 80,000 people crowd into stadiums to watch 19-and-20-year-olds inflict permanent physical and neurological harm upon each other. These athletes play for base-level college tuition and the very, very slim chance that they’ll someday play football professionally." No we don't or most anybody. We don't go to watch the young men inflict pain on each other.

He does the worst no no when writing articles and that is to tell people what they do or do not do. You can't just put everybody in one pool and say you do this. It's not true. Then to go on to touch on the subject of paying players...... blah blah blah. Obviously, by reading the 2nd paragraph, most can tell the agenda you were trying to splur.

Here's this gem. "College football fans suffer from permanent separation anxiety." Again, not true. Quit putting all fans in one pool. I don't. Many don't as we understand it and are used to it. Yes, maybe when I was like 10 I'd think the team was doomed because so and so left, but most sensible fans understand players are only temporarily there. Maybe you should state "Some college fans................".

I could probably pull out more if I actually read the entire article. I only saw the 2nd line as was the first line in a paragraph when browsing.

I think we can agree that he needs more than 20 snaps a game though. Dude played half a game Saturday and was B10 defensive player of the week.
