Scholarship Question

If I’m looking at it correctly and everyone eligible comes back and 5 recruits come in, I count 14 on scholarship??

What am I missing??

No. Do not think the McCaffery boys scholarships are in question.

Currently we have one open unused scholarship. Two seniors Kreiner and Evelyn. Till is not going to be on scholarship next year. That’s 4 so leaves us one short.

My speculation is the fifth and final one will come likely from either Pemsl transferring, or Wieskamp or Garza potentially pursuing a pro career.

If you're only staring at one scholarship, it's pretty easy to make that happen. Most of the time, things just work themselves out.

I just meant, Fran with his kids on ship means he has flexibility if he wants to pay their toll. He's said he will in the past, I doubt either of them ever go into walk on status, but the fact remains he seems cool with it if that were his only option.

With the Murray boys coming in and them being twins its an NCAA rule that they only account for one scholly, which helps out a lot

only one of them can be on the court or the room at the same time. Kris gets breakfast, Keegan gets lunch, Kris brings dinner back to the dorms so they can share. They just hope they don't get any serious injuries cause that could be tougher to replicate.

I think the likely scenario is that Pemsl transfers....otherwise you simply take Connor off scholarship.

If no attrition, maybe he gives Till a scholarship again and pays for both his sons? I can't see him paying for just one of them while the other is still on the team. That would be an awkward dinner table. Then again I don't know the added benefits scholarship athletes get over walkons besides the academic & room and board costs. Do they get any other freebies shoes, equipment etc. that walkons don't get?

Side note, is there a limit to number of walkons a team can have?

No limits for walk on players

Kinda feels like he should but it depends on what his goals are. If he's looking to play more at a smaller school then yeah for sure he should look around. If he just wants to graduate a Hawkeye and riding the bench is fine by him he might not leave... I kinda thought if PT was something he was looking for he'd have left before this season so a part of me thinks he'll be back. We'll see

Why would Pemsl transfer with Kreiner graduating and Garza perhaps pursuing pro ball somewhere?

I think pemsl woulda transferred already had Cook not left early. Then i think Pemsl thought he'd play more this season than he has. Instead Nunge and Kriener both jumped him so kinda shows where Fran was at with him. Lastly, I don't think Garza leaves early.

All speculation on my part.

Well the Garza thing would be interesting to follow. Nunge returns and we bring in Ogundele, not to mention Fran might be intrigued more by this small ball style. If Pat puts on some muscle he can play some 4.

Quite frankly I’m not sure Pemsl is cut out for this level at his current state. With his injury history maybe he just hangs it up after this year. It’s quite possible that Iowa hasn’t even promised him a scholarship for next season. He’s an undersized center who is very underwhelming athletically. He’s shooting 17.6% from the field right now, for a big man who only shoots close range shots, words can’t really describe how bad that is. Again you feel for the kid because a lot of it has to do with injuries.

He may not transfer. Hopefully he’s just rusty and as the season progresses he improves.

But I can see a scenario where he transfers. Pemsl struggles all season. Garza and Nunge eat up a lot of minutes. They figure out how to manage Patrick’s situation so he can be on the floor. A couple athletic twins arrive on campus.

I'm baffled by the talk of Pemsl transferring. He's never mentioned it, as far as I know. Kid hustles his butt off whenever he's on the court, sacrifices his body, tough as nails and never backs down. Iowa needs somebody on their team with his kind of grit, willing to do the dirty work. Also a solid FT shooter, if I remember correctly.

You don't know what is motivating Pemsl. He's not going to be an NBA player, I'm sure he's already realized that. Perhaps he wants to get his degree and make a nice career for himself other than basketball. A U of Iowa degree goes a long ways to help with that.

I certainly hope he doesn't. He's not the greatest player but Pemsl provides good depth.

You tend to get "jumped" when you get a DUI. And, he is playing hurt.
