Say it is the Rose Bowl, what would winning it mean?!

-13 win season
-Possible Top 5 finish (If MSU wins the whole thing, Iowa could have a shot to be in the Top 4)
-Finally winning the Rose Bowl in the Modern Era
-Beating a Top 10/Top 5 opponent in the process

-If Iowa returns most of its players (King stays, Ott gets his wish) here is your schedule for next year.

No reason Iowa can't compete again for the Big Ten Title and maybe more than that. Iowa should be a favorite (maybe the favorite) next year to win the Big Ten depending on who leaves and stays (and for our opponents).

Imo, it depends on how KF handles expectations. His track record is spotty at best when it comes to this. Of the 2nd tier B1G teams Wisconsin just had a run, MSU is currently on one and Iowa?????

No question on that. That is one thing Ferentz has not done well when Iowa is expected to do well. But, this team has a lot of heart this year and I would hope that would carry over to the next season.

What would it mean? Nothing really. The biggest game of the year was yesterday and although they represented well they lost it. Whatever bowl game they end up in is anti climactic at this point, it's just another game.

This.

We've already proven we can play (and should have beaten) the 'best.' The playoffs is where it's at. Bowl games are dinosaurs.

Big-6 bowl games, while typically matching two very good teams, mean nothing more than TV ratings and money to the league and various chambers-of-commerce.

Not much prestige in winning the consolation prize really.

But wouldn't a Rose Bowl win continue to build on things and build up the Iowa perception?! Iowa was kind of like new money this year in some regards. A Rose Bowl win could be a program confidence builder.....and Iowa would beat a conference champion in the process.

Bowls aren't quite exhibition games. They mean something. You get a trophy, it effects final rankings and you play a team you normally don't get to. The more the playoffs expands the less it means but winning a big bowl still matters.

Will help recruiting to finish in top 5 for sure.

Bowls mean nothing anymore though.

There going to have to keep expanding the playoff because there just inst going to be interest in bowls anymore.

Without looking, somebody tell me the teams who played in the non-playoff Big-6 bowl games last year, and, who won.

(thought so)

Now, tell me who the final four teams were, and who won each game.

End of discussion.

Top 5.

Recruiting nirvana

Don't kid yourself the Iowa recruiting ranking never varies that much and its more a function of geography than blaming the current staff. I know its cliche but Iowa has to find the diamonds in the rough, the players that other schools have overlooked. Its more important for Iowa to keep a high percentage of its players from transferring/quitting than having a high recruiting ranking.

Its nice when we pull the occasional Jaleel Johnson or Jordan Walsh but more often than not its players like Drew Ott(8 man football player not offerred by Nebraska, Bazata not offerred by Nebraska, Josey Jewell who I believe only had FCS offers, Jordan Canzeri who was headed to Villanova or some small school until we got in at the end and Desmond King Thorpe winner who was not offerred by MSU or Michigan.

This is the biggest reason Kirk Ferentz is the right coach for Iowa, not a lot of coaches can take players for the most part that have been overlooked by others and win with them. Its also why Iowa is a cycle program and will not win every year.

It is also why when you have an opportunity like this you have to take advantage.

Winning the last game of the season, no matter which one, would mean a ton. The Rose has additional meaning to most.

It would mean 13-1, a win against a very very good football team, additional national repect, positive recruiting tool, a final positive lasting memory for the Seniors and the fans.

For those thinking the "exibition" games mean little or nothin, win or lose....I assume you had no feelings about last year's bowl, didn't bother you at all...it just didn't matter right? BS. Absolute BS.

I'm crushed and heartbroken from last night's game. Being so close and coming up a hair short was beyond brutal. A win in a major bowl won't change that, but it'll help. The top bowls still matter, not as much as they once did, but they still matter.

The team is likely absolutely physically and emotionally shot. It will be no small feat to get them back and ready in 3 weeks. And they will have a very difficult opponent regardless.

Bounce back Hawks.

And, Chuck Long, had offers from *only* NU and NIU.

We don't recruit. We develop. Big names won't flock to Iowa because we won a consolation Rose Bowl.

Example: The big-whoop recruiting of class that included Jake Christiansen flamed out big time.

Simply put, I'd rather lose in the playoffs than win in a consolation bowl game.

Especially considering you have to be a B1G league champ to make the playoffs.

National eyes are on the playoffs. Local eyes are on the consolation bowl games.

And no, honestly, last year's Hawk-slayer bowl didn't interest me in the least. It was a crap bowl for a crap season. Nobody watched, or cared about it, other than Iowa and TN fans.

Playoffs are better than Bowls. You don't really need three posts to justify it. This is still fun because it's a big game in a traditional setting against a top team. Just enjoy that we get to watch Iowa play in an awesome setting. Iowa gets a chance to finish their highest in the rankings than they have in a long time. Enjoy it for what it is.

Fact is, American sports train us to think championship or bust but quite frankly, that doesn't exactly work too well the way college football is structured. We all wanted to win that game last night but poo pooing what is still a great accomplishment isn't really worth anyone's time and comes across as meatbally.

#1--I'll post as often as I please, thank you. Don't like it? Don't read it.

#2--"Fun" is right. But little else.

#3--The playoffs are long overdue and were discussed for decades. Only the cartel of league commissioners kept it out for as long as they did.

#4--We blew the chance to be in what really matters. If you're so thrilled about missing a once-in-a-lifetime chance, so be it. Better yet, become a Wisconsin fan....Barry won more Rosebowls than Kirk and Hayden combined.
