Sandberg Open to Managing Cubs

It's fair to say that Quade is on the hot seat. Many believed a few weeks ago that he would survive this miserable season. These reports about Ryno surfacing could be a sign that the writing is on the wall for Quade. I don't think Sandberg or any other Manager could have done much with this group of misfits, but someone has to pay. It should be Jim Hendry IMO, but many feel Quade is over his head in this position.

if quade is in over head, then what is ryno????
I don't disagree. People think because he had a little success in Iowa and is a Hall of Fame second baseman, that he can go to Chicago and bring the franchise to glory. I just don't see it, but I would guess he will get the job if Quade is let go, so we may find out.

I'm not a Cub fan, but Ryno has managed in three different levels, (A,AA,AAA), for the Cubs. He is now the triple A manager for the Phillies. He has won at all three levels for the Cubs and his Phillies team is leading in their division!

Yes, he's had success in the minor leagues, would that transfer to a job like the Cubs? I don't know, but they need MAJOR changes for any Manager to be successful there.

He was 202-215 at A and AA combined. He was 284-277 in his entire Cubs minor league managing career. Also both Peoria and Tennessee had significantly better records the year after Sandberg left.

Its low level minor league baseball, sure its nice to win but records really mean absolutely nothing. Its all about player development.

I'd fire Hendry and Quade at this point. I'd hire the best GM I could get and allow him to hire a new coach. If that happened to be Sandberg, so be it.

I hope they keep Quade for another season, let him finish his contract. It's not his fault this year. All he can do is run the players out there and hope it works, and when you are running your 5th and 6th stringers, well we know how hard it is to win games like that (especially when your 1 and 2 stringers aren't that great either).

Sandberg would have done none better (maybe marginally, but not much) and I say give him another year and then bring him in. I love the Quade hire, especially how he handled the Silva deal, and I like Sandberg. I'll cheer the Cubs on no matter what, but if you fire Quade and Hendry stays something is definately wrong.

I still feel the Cubs could convince Girardi to leave NY and come back to Chicago.

I think you're dreaming, buddy. I feel like if they hired Ryno that he would at least bring some fire to the club and light a fire under some of the players' you know whats. And that's something this club needs real bad. Half of the time it looks like they're just going through the motions. Pretty depressing, to say the least.

P.S. - I'm with you guys who want Hendry gone. He has made some of thee dumbest moves. I would love to see him go.

I agree, it's clearly past time to change directions. The Cubs need a new GM!

I think the change is coming at the top. Ricketts wants to decrease the pay roll and Hendry doesn't think that is the way to compete. The cubs need a GM that has done it with lower payroll and with young talent (Rays or Royals (yes the royals)) come to mind. The royals always have young talent stock piled but trade it away when they get pricey. the cubs could develop and keep that talent.

Hendry isn't shy about trading talent for a big name.....aka Harden, Garza etc. (though the prospects weren't great they were some of the cubs top prospects)

Now I think Quade gets another year and Hendry is gone. My prediction

My hope is that the Cubs will fire Quade/Hendry, bring in Bob Brenley and have him assist in hiring the GM. The guy is a winner and by watching the team everyday should have a good idea of who the Cubs should keep and who they should get rid of. I love Ryno, but this team not only needs a manager they need a competent GM. I don't know that Ryno would have the experience or credentials to guide the Cubs on retooling the entire organization.
Perhaps if the Cubs get a strong GM, Ryno could be successful as a manager.

I personally don't get the hate on Quade. He hasn't messed up. He's been riddled with injuries. Missed 40% of his rotation for a third of the season and all of them have been on the DL or missed a start. His outfield has rarely seen the starting three in at the same time. Guys who were supposed to pick up the slack have been terrible (colvin). Ramirez and Pena waited until June to start hitting. He has had to rely on Doug Davis, Rodrigo Lopez, and Ramon Ortiz as starters! How was this all Quade's fault? Maybe if Hendry could get hims some players.

I would like to see Maddux as GM, then he can hire who he wants. I like Quade for now. In a few years if it was maddux/Ryno as GM/manager, I would be very happyw with that.

quade has not done anything to negatively impact the team.

in fact he should probably be given credit for that fact that this team is 18 games under and is still competing daily. they have not given up in the least.

A lot of people think Maddux is a pretty smart guy. We know he has love for the Cubbies. I wouldn't mind seeing him take over as GM.
