Sam LaPorta Joining Campbell in Detroit

Lol, Spielman is just going to have them bring in Moss and Merriweather as well. I am somewhat joking, but wouldn't be shocked if it happened.

Taking him when they did was a pretty shrewd move. For whatever reasons many didn't think he was much more then a borderline a top 5 TE in the class. Maybe a 3rd or 4th rd guy. Which I thought was stupid. People didn't seem to take into account that he had the production he had with Petras as his QB and that O. If he was on any high powered O he woulda been the # 1 TE hands down. Lions saw that and weren't going to gamble and hope he'd be there in the 3rd round so they just took him in 2nd.

Trading TJH how they did and then replacing him with Laporta is just next level GM work if you ask me. (not to mention taking Jack before that) TJH is going to land himself a Kittle like contract extension soon enough. I hope he stays with MN anyway that's a great fit for him too.

Correct. Maybe the kid from Georgia is slightly better, but if LaPorta was on Tennessee, Alabama, Clemson, etc. he would have been a mid first round pick for sure.

Iowa's tight ends are typically very good blockers or they wouldn't be on the field. That is one thing that gets overlooked and adds a lot of value in the NFL game. Laporta fits that mold.

Pretty cool that Detroit is replacing one stud Iowa TE for another. Still don't get trading Hockensen, but as a Vikings fan, I will take it.

Not sure I totally agree with these takes. Scouts and coaches are shrewd enough to understand that some talented kids aren't going to shine in crappy offenses. But, you can watch tape and see if a kid can block, run routes, and has good hands. Sam is a good blocker, but not an elite one. He has good hands, but has also shown some inconsistencies. He is a very good route runner. I felt LaPorta was drafted a bit low, but I do not think that he showed the type of talent that Hock and Fant showed at Iowa. And, given that Iowa is generally known as TE U, I would think most Iowa TEs would be given more benefit of the doubt than TEs from other schools.

Frankly, most TEs are drafted after the first round. It is not a premium position and you usually only see a couple TEs go on day one. Sam will have a good chance to have a long NFL career. But, I think he has a bit more ceiling than Hock and Kittle. That is not a sleight, just what my eyes tell me.
