Sally Mason defends not releasing Coker info

The desire some have to know so much about college students kind of creeps me out.

Some people don't get that the U is complying with the law, not hiding behind it. I don't understand why some people just don't get sh!t, but I guess that's what keeps me coming back to this board day after day to get my chuckles.

Complying with FERPA is one thing. I think some of the posters on here were referring to the process, etc, not being released. Not necessarily protected information.

There is an appeal process in the student athlete code of conduct, and none of the steps in this process were ever released. What I mean, before everyone starts to insult me, is they didn't release things like was an appeal filed, what was the timeline and steps in the process, etc. None of these general items are protected, nor should they be.

"solid reasoning"? Not really. Mason and the UI are using their opinion of the law to hide behind said law from releasing public information. Right in your own link it says two lower courts do not agree with Mason and the UI and it is now pending a SC ruling.

Up for debate, said Kathleen Richardson, director of the Iowa Freedom of Information Council, is what student information fits the qualification of an “education record.”

Richardson said that debate is playing out in courtrooms across the country. One such lawsuit filed against UI by the Press-Citizen recently was argued before the Iowa Supreme Court. The Press-Citizen argued that a number of documents related to a 2007 sexual assault case involving three student-athletes should be made public. UI argued that they are protected under FERPA, Richardson said.

Two lower courts have agreed that the information should be made public. The Supreme Court has not handed down its decision in the case.

Too bad you weren't even more "creeped out" by a public institution not offering full transparency (hiding information?) about high profile incidents and assaults and the institution's investigations.

Pretty much every big organization does this in some capacity. There's nothing I can do about it. So I just don't care.

I don't care about the info. What I care about is our starter being suspended for no reason. The administration fired first and then stayed quiet. A promising young mans reputation was at stake. Fail iowa

Why do people around feel like it is their right to know what happened with Coker. As an athelete myself in college, i sure as hell wouldnt want stuff about what happened to me to be mad public.

People need to quit getting so personally attached to a team/program and just enjoy what happens on the field like a fan is suppose to do. These middle aged men coming to message boards trying to figure out what an athelete is doing and not doing off the field is very creepy and glad i did not have to endure that as a student athelete.

If I'm the U, and had info that may or may not be under the FERPA laws, guess what, I'm not releasing it until the court says I can. Why would I risk the threat of more lawsuits from the parties involved? Answer: I certainly wouldn't

iowa boy and scourt...there you go again...making sense. On this board, there is NO future in that stance.

Heres what some of you need to ask yourself before posting on this subject. "If Marcus was my son, would I want the world to know what he did?" Now thats assuming that he was/is guilty. If he did nothing wrong, why hasnt HE made a statement? They are doing the right thing here. Why do you people care? because you love the Hawks and think you deserve to know? because you donate $100.00 a year you think you deserve to know? Even if you donate millions you dont deserve to know, nor should you. Why is this an issue? Where theres smoke, theres fire. He obviously did SOMETHING. may not be as bad as some think or claim, but he had to do something, the U of I wouldnt/couldnt/ and shouldnt suspend someone for nothing. Just drop it. Answer me this, if it was your child, would you want that public?

if it was my child and he was innocent and I felt he was railroaded you're damn right I would want him to clear his name. I wonder if the U screwed up and has offered hush money. Too much cya in Iowa's admin for my taste.

As long as there is a pending SC ruling, it's good risk management, not "hiding behind the law".

@spud. Then why hasnt Coker released a statement proclaiming his innocence? He can say what he wants, the U can't. My guess is there's more to the story and maybe there's merit to the punishment. There's more to the story we don't know?!?!? What? Weird I know

coker actually made a comment that he couldnt comment on it. my take is that maybe there was a gag agreement and he felt it was just better for himself to leave instead of keep being asked about a situation that had been dealt with. innocent or not i understand why he left and sometimes saying nothing is best.

i'm sure the girl went to the police and then the hospital for evidence gathering for her jollies......nuttin better to do, probably.

First of all, he did state on Facebook that he did nothing wrong and was being punished for something he didn't do.

Second of all, football organizations, both college and pro, like their athletes to be seen and not heard. Coker looks to be a borderline NFL player and he needs an opportunity to play in college. Even with a statement, he can't change the past and any damage done to his reputation, but the fact that he didn't throw any parting shots at the university is an attractive trait to many football programs.

However, that doesn't mean what the university did was right, and I think it would be foolish to presume any level of guilt because of this.
