Sagarin: Iowa #1

Sagarin has Iowa #1 in his ELO-Chess ranking, which is what he submits to the BCS. He has Iowa 4 in his computer composite

He also has Iowa with the #15 Strength of Schedule

Colley had Iowa at #1 last week, and I doubt that goes down...so Iowa will have at least two computers that have them at #1...and that means that one of those rankings will count. Iowa could move up to 2 or 1 in the computer component

I am hoping we can jump TCU or maybe Boise State in the USA Today poll at least. we would jump to 4th for sure

Ok Jon, here is how it should play out...

Crunching some numbers and assuming Iowa's computer rankings in the other polls won't get WORSE.

Texas was ranked 10th in ELO, that is HUGE, massive, awesome. Why? Because it brings their average almost equal to Iowa. If any of the other polls move Iowa above Texas, Iowa will have the number 3 spot. (Assuming Harris and Coaches move Iowa to 4th.)

The point is this, Iowa doesn't need the human pollsters as much as some people think. The computers are a third of the equation and the pollsters would have to move Iowa down quite a bit to change that fact. Bama or Florida beating each other leaves Iowa in a good place.

All of this is moot if Iowa doesn't win of course. They gotta take care of Indiana.

UNI is ranked 80th ahead of Syracuse, Indiana, Colorado, and just behind Purdue (#75). Tennessee is #41...so obvioulsy those blocked FGs by Alabama matter more. ;-)

Here's a better break down of what I'm saying.

Assuming the new ELO and the others don't move Iowa down.

If 4th in human polls:

5th:

6th:

If the computer polls continue to move Iowa up, they have a chance to overtake Alabama as well in the computer poll, further moving Iowa closer to 3rd place over texas.

If they can get to 4th place in the coaches and harris polls in the next 4 weeks, they won't need anything more, the computers will take care of the rest.
