Ryan Kreiner appreciation thread

When Kriener got in the game...Fran, the players, on the court and on the bench and probably every fan watching seemed to think...What, what, what...yes, yes, yes...good for him. He has some fire in him, not afraid, feels like he belongs. Came up big. And he has a few post moves, something we have lacked for years in our big men.

Can't wait to get a couple of big men next year to allow Cook to play with more freedom and not against giants like Haas...dude is huge... Makes Swanigan (sp) look little.

Cook's high bank off the glass, under duress, with his left hand...wow...

He was absolutely the reason the momentum shifted. Purdue wasn't sure what to do with him defensively, didn't come out on the 15 ft jumper to guard him. He also had 8 boards in only 8 minutes, that is impressive. Just what we needed at the time. Against teams with good size, thinking Fran may need to use him more. He seems to want to bang around more than Wagner and Uhl. Compared to many of our freshmen big men in the past, he is actually pretty coordinated too. The move up and under the basket was a great move for a young player. Huge confidence booster for him.

Box score lists Kriener with 2 rebounds...Baer had 10...

Agree...unknown sub off the bench...time for the Purdue guy to take a break...not so fast my friends...

I blame Miller, I swear I read that stat on rebounds on one of his tweets :)

Love the hustle down the floor....came up big tonight.
I noticed that too he beat his guy down the floor every single trip. Now granted he was fresh as could be. But he was playing hard. The confidence he must have now after last night has to have him on cloud 9 and rightfully so. He won't go up against a bigger/better front line then those two guys. He stood in there and battled. Purdue didn't have him scouted that's for sure. More of him and less of Uhl/Wagner wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit.

I'll eat crow...I was trying to figure out why the hell Fran didn't shirt him. Six points in a big stretch against a top 20 team and I admit, I now get it. He finally looked like he belonged to me and was comfortable. He's hitting that 10-12 jumper that Cook needs to hit. If Cook starts hitting that and guys have to come out and guard him. Look out.

It's also pronounced like CREAN - like Tom Crean.... Ryan Kriener - not Ryan CRYNER like they've been saying on KXNO all morning.

So, *not* pronounced like this guy's last name? :)

Ryan has a very nice three in addition to his midrange. Let's not forget his slippery moves around the basket, similar to Cordells. He is surefooted and a good defender, a fearless defender that is.....

He could very well become another reliable sniper from the perimeter, joining Jok and Jordan, Baer and Brady and of course Moss in that respect.....

Ryan took Haas to the floor and would not let go of the ball, same as Cordell. Both fought Haas and Swanigan every second on the floor.....

He stepped right in at a crucial time in the game and not only held his own, he excelled. I liked his confidence shooting the ball. He was open and showed no fear. His outstanding play gives the Hawks another scoring threat on the floor. He has Cordell's slick moves under the basket. It will be a problem for any team to contain any combination of Cook, Pemsl and Kriener. Wagner and Uhl are playing well now and that gives us a lot of increasingly dependable options for our enemies to handle around the basket.....

With Jordan's constant improvement, especially feeding the Large Lads on the pick and roll we have suddenly become a very difficult team to stop inside. I can't recall, in recent memory, a Hawkeye threat of this caliber inside.....

Love the attitude the Hawks have. No fear and back down to nobody. They proved that against Purdue at Carver.....

Agree...Kriener has some slick moves and is better than he looks...similar to Baer. Would be nice to give him a red shirt to get stronger...

Also nice to see a player, with a nice, open, mid range jumper take the thing instead of hesitating and passing it away...or worse, yet, turning it over. Your offense works to get good looks and when they are there...take them...they don't all go in, but some do. Pull the trigger. JB has the habit of pulling the trigger with confidence as well when the shot is there.

Kriener's sense of confidence is in stark comparison to Uhl...who doesn't seem to know what to do with the ball in the same situation...but a small sample of course...press on Kriener...

On a side note...got to see in person The Greek Freak from the Milwaukee Bucks last night...up close, fifth row...on the floor... Wow...would he fit nice into Fran ball!!!! Mobile, athletic, long...at the back of a zone or on the point of a press...Cook has a little bit of that game right now...but smaller.

When the morning slot opened up, I actually wanted Travis to get it. I've given the show several legitimate chances, but it just doesn't work for me. I miss the good ole days when JM had a show.

Totally agree! Jon and Deace set a level in which all the shock jocks can't contend with. Since they aren't true fans, they just try to keep listeners by pissing them off much like Colin Cowturd.

Gotta give it up for Kriener. I was like, "Oh, no" when he came in the game. But he played really well.

He's a project though, imo. With two solid looking bigs coming in next year he's gonna have to work if he wants significant minutes. Not saying he can't do it, but it won't be easy. Hope this game gave him some confidence.

Ryan has a nice three, smooth and accurate as evidenced in this high school video. I do realize that he is playing for Spirit Lake, but his stroke is very nice.....

I do like the bold attitude Ryan and Jordan have. No hesitation when open. Jordan has dialed it down a bit as the season progresses, has developed a tiny bit of conscience. However I don;t mind him shooting at any time. Fran had given him the green light but might have toned it down a little.....

I do believe Kriener is a steal. A verified Diamond that is quite promising.....

Uhl is coming along very well. He is more comfortable on offense which is good and will get better. His role never was to be a scorer. He does very well on defense and rebounding. He has a long reach and wide stride when guarding the perimeter. He usually contains whomever he is guarding. Just took a while to adjust to his new teammates and wasn't confident in being considered a main scoring option.....

Good stuff you are posting, revkev.....

I also read about the eight rebounds.....

Seemed like a massive amount for the floor time.....

ESPN had it as 2 rebounds...I don't know if it was accurate...I don't recall him getting nearly that many, Baer, yes...while watching the game.

Kriener...open...shoot...don't think...perfect.

Kenpom had him down for 2 rebounds as well. I'm not sure who started the 8 rebound stuff, but it appears to be incorrect?

Kirk needs to pick that up...
