Running Backs

With 58 days left before the kickoff to the 2011 season I can't help but wonder who we have at running backs. Obviously M. Coker but who are the next 2 or 3 deep. With our history the past few years we need 3-5 on the list.

Also who is #2 QB?

Must admit I'm starting to get hyped again. Nothing better than getting the season started. I've been watching B10 channel and it's firing me up.

My advise, is to look it up. Alot has been written on this. That said I hope McCall gets to see mop up duty early and often.

Right now number 2 at RB is Jason White, a Walk-on from Davenport. I would have to think either DeAndre Johnson or McCall will have a say here before all is said and done. However, Jason White WILL be the listed number 2 come the first game barring one of the FR absolutely blowing up or White getting injured. That's the way Kirk rolls.

I would have to think Wienke is number two right now though by most accounts Derby has made lots of strides. FWIW- I think Wienke throws the best ball out of the 3 QB that were on the roster this spring.

Really? So what's holding him back? No doubt he is talented and I kind of feel a little bad for him that he may never play much.

Wait so you basing this solely on one day of performance in the spring? I watched the spring practice that was streamed and I didn't come away with the same impression. I thought they all looked a lil rough, however it was a pretty bad weather day.

No sm, I didn't base it on ONE practice in the spring. I base it on more than a few practices and pre game warm ups. I've had a coach concur with my assessment as well. Granted that coach or I haven't played QB in our life so it's merely 2 opinions. However when I watch the kid throw he does appear more accurate with better touch. You or someone else may see it differently. If I was correct, what's holding him back? I dion't know, decision making? Command of the offense? Feel for the game? Maybe all of those or none of those.

Wienke MIGHT throw a better long ball. Other than that, he is behind JVB in accuracy, quickness of release, "tough" throws, etc.

I think that it is "good news" that the coaches still appear to be high on Wienke. In fact, from everything that the coaches seem to indicate about our depth at QB ... it would appear that they're quite happy with our group of QBs.

I hope for a good battle. It will really push the starter. I also hope we can give the numbero two some more snaps than what Kirk and KOK allowed last year.

How'd we begin talking about QBs again in a RB thread? Anyway, I'm anxious to see DeAndre because I have a feeling if he's 100% and has recovered fully from the injuries he's going to be special.

The battle for position should be pretty good this year. I am excited to many of them. As you said Johnson should be up to speed. Coker is fun to watch. McCall could be one of the best. I also have thought how fun it would be to watch our OL open it up for Canzeri. I would like to see some of the younger guys get some mop up time. Gives us a preview but also gives them some game time.

DeAndre Johnson has been said to have made definite strides during the spring ... however, that notwithstanding, he still is reported to still have a good ways to go. I love what Canzeri brings to the table ... however, I doubt that we'll see him see action as a TR FR. It's one thing to be a bit undersized ... however, you're also going to want him to be more acclimated to his blocking responsibilities before you throw him to the wolves.

I've heard so many positives about White ... even folks saying that they anticipated that he would have been a position to start at safety had he remained there. Thus, I'm inclined to believe that the folks wouldn't keep White at RB unless they felt he really brought something positive to the table. Thus, I wouldn't sleep on him.

Of course, that said, like many ... my gut feeling tells me that McCall is going to make the competition awfully fierce. I've already heard some buzz suggesting that McCall is awful tough ... and that he's going to have a great chance to see the field early.

Quite frankly, I'm pretty confident that we'll have a RB emerge between Johnson, White, and McCall ... and that guy will get quite a number of reps and he'll be BETTER than serviceable. Furthermore, I think that we'll end up having 3 guys who have more than 200 yards.

White is one of my new faves...special teamer, and one of the first down on kickoffs consistently. Filled in at DB when low numbers there and now RB. Just a team player, and not a bad looking player when he gets the chance. I hope he gets an opportunity to put his hands on the ball in some meaningful spots as he appears to have some speed/shiftiness to him.

I think D. Johnson steps up. He would be a great change of pace guy. If he's patient and uses his quickness, he will take advantage of defenses that have grown weary of the pounding of a 235 pound back. Kind of the Freddie Russell type of back.

Brommelkamp just said on his radio show that everyone he has talked to and every he talked to today indicated to him that Canzeri will redshirt this season.

I heard an interview with White the other day and really like this kid. WEll spoken, great attitude, only wants to contribute to the team and I dont think it was the PC player-speak we hear all the time. He seemed very genuine, the type of guy I am hoping for the best for. I hope he gets a shot and does well.
