11.7.2 Football Bowl Subdivision - There shall be a limit of one head coach, nine assistant coaches and two graduate assistant coaches who may be employed by an institution in bowl subdivision football.

11.7.2.1 Exceptions to Number Limits FBS - No individual other than coaches designated to fill the coaching categories set forth in Bylaw 11.7.2 may participate in any manner in the coaching of the intercollegiate team of a member institution during any football game, practice or other organized activity, with the following exceptions:

11.7.2.1.1 Weight or Strength Coach FBS - A weight (strength and conditioning) coach may conduct flexibility, warm-up and physical conditioning activities prior to any game and prior to or during any practice or other organized activities without being included in the limitations on number of coaches.

11.7.2.1.2 Undergraduate Coach FBS - The limits on the number of coaches in this section do not apply to undergraduate coaches.

This means we can have 9 assistant coaches. That doesn't include strength coaches such as Doyle. We have 9 coaches currently. So we can't hire a coach just to do the special teams. The only way we can do that is if one coach coaches two different positions.

Yep.

Of course some HC's also coach positions. Also, many DC's also coach a position.

True.

I wouldn't mind seeing Kirk coaching the offensive line. That'd free up a slot. KOK coaches the quarterbacks and I think that OC should coach the quarterbacks, it makes sense. Would be nice to have a DC that could coach another position. I think that's part of the reason why were spread so thinly is because Norm can't do as much as he did in the past. It's starting to show up in our special teams.

KF does not have to be a positional coach, as the layuot provtdes for adequate position for coaches, he does however work with Mogan on the O-Line, as this is being discussed in another thread;
Erb and Wilson handle ST duties, Erb KO's & Punts, Wilson the PR & KOR Teams

Wilson is also doing double duty somewhere else right now.

Really it is KFs fault we are here again. He should step up and take on more.

actually he needs to do less and let his assistants do their jobs, that is why they were hired in the 1st place, as far as Wilson, what else is he doing other than RB's & ST
as far as KF taking over any position spot i can't see it freeing up a coaching spot unless a coach is fired

If KF takes over a positional spot then that coach can take over the full time special teams spot.

Do we really need a special teams coach to tell our guys to watch for a fake or to use common sense and predict onside kicks

Let's say Norm was to retire (Hypothetically), and we hired a new DC. Could Norm fall into a one of these sub categories somehow?

Is there a way he could still review tape for the coaches? Can he be up in the press box? I just don't see Norm making it full time another 1-2 years, but at the same sense I think he knows if he gives up Iowa football he'll probably die like Paul 'Bear' Bryant did a month after retiring.

Be nice if there could be some kind of happy medium for him. I like Norm, his D's have been ranked high nationally in scoring defense but he's not able to recruit due to health. Be nice if we could have a D coordinator that could recruit and still have Norm apart of the program somehow. A bad example of this would be Jerry at PSU, I heard he was recruiting kids after he retired and he was apart of the PSU program (in a bad way) still with his own office. It's a sin to mention Norm retiring or saying Norm and Jerry in the same sentence but I was wondering if any of you could clarify if it's possible within NCAA rules

Ranked last year by ESPNU as the 26th linebacker prospect in the country, Ah Ching said he was paid a visit by Penn State’s former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky.
"He came to my last spring game going into my senior season. He liked how I moved, laterally, and how gifted I am," said Ah Ching.

Wilson doesn't do RBs. He's the LB coach and special teams. Right now, our LBs seem to need all the focused attention they can get.

I don't see Ferentz taking on a position coaching job either. Morgan does a good job with our O Line and that's the area Ferentz would most likely switch to. I have to wonder how much we need a dedicated TE coach. It seems like they could absorb that elsewhere.

If a "creative" use of Norm was possible in a non-assistant position, I'm sure you'd see the SEC with 25 "non-assistants" on staff.

Johnson was taken off TE's after his Stross meltdown. Soup was covering both TE's and WR's. They put Johnson back on TE's and the results have not been great.

So yeah, making him recruiting and ST might not be a bad idea.

Either that, or stop PF'ing around so Wilson doesn't have 3 different responsibilities.

Johnson had a Stross meltdown? What was that about?

Soup just needs to coach every position. End of story. ;)

Chosenchildren made a good observation the other day in his post about KF looking tired and burnt out. I think a good way to rejuvenate him would be to add Brian to the staff in some capacity. Figuring out a way to do that without firing someone makes my head hurt.

So you bring in Brian for TEs (makes sense) but where do you put Johnson? He's been there 13 years, something tells me he's not leaving anytime soon.
