Rudock Continues to Impress

In 23 defense, I havne't seen him posting that since the season started. He said whoever won the spot he would root for, and I don't see him calling for Sokol anywhere.....uniess I missed something??

I havent seen him post anything about how rudock has been doing well or to eat crow that maybe the coaches picked the right guy and that they didn't blackball Sokol either. He did make it seem like there was some conspiracy by the media and fans and coaches to keep Sokol out of the lineup even though he was clearly better in the 2 practices/scrimmages people saw even though the coaches saw him for much more time including a whole redshirt season of practice along with jake.

It goes to show that watching one or two scrimmages really doesn't tell you much at all. I mean a guy can flash in a practice or two, but the ones who consistently bring it each and every practice are usually the ones that will be consistent in games as well.

I wrote that I thought Sokol would be the guy by midseason. That's worse than my 12-0 prediction.

Rudock is playing at a level greater than anyone could have expected. His future is very bright. He and Tate are the two best Soph QB's of my lifetime, and I include Chuck Long and Matt Rodgers on that list.

As for the Illinois game in 2008, Iowa had three instances first and ten or goal inside the Illinois 15 in the first half, and I think came away with six points. Can't remember for sure but I believe it was something like that. Rick also had a fumble-six late in that contest, too. In 2009 as a junior, didn't he have five INT's in one game against Indiana?

Ricky was solid, he was good. He wasn't elite, he wasn't great. In my listing of Iowa's Top 5 QB's of the past 20 years, he struggles to make the Top Five.

1. Chuck Long
2. Chuck Hartlieb
3. Drew Tate
4. Brad Banks
5. Rodgers? Stanzi?

Ricky had the ability to flush bad plays, which not all QB's have. He was a great leader. He also played at a time when Iowa had three of its best defensive lines in school history. The 2008 Iowa defense was wicked good, as was the 2009 defense. Ballard, Clayborn, Klug as DL's in 2009?? He had Shonn Greene as a running back, Tony Moeaki as a TE and McNutt and DJK to throw to at receivers. Greene is an all timer, Moeaki is one of the most talented TE's ever to wear an Iowa jersey and McNutt and DJK are two of the best receivers in school history.

Rudock? He doesn't have those things going for him at all.

Rudock does have the benefit of a very good offensive line and a full stable of runningbacks & fullbacks. The receivers seem to be growing in ability right along with Rudock. I don't know how many wins that will get us, but it's going to make Iowa football a lot more interesting.

Not sure if you're countering Jon's points, but while what you said is true, it's nothing like what Stanzi had. That 2008 line was by far the best since 2002, and it wasn't all that far behind. And Shonn Greene/Hampton, Robinson/Wegher/Coker made up a pretty strong group of running backs.

I wasn't countering his point, but I was thinking a bit further back to the situation we had when Tate came in. That 2004 offensive line was good at pass blocking. The line was never particularly good at run blocking, but by a few games into the season it was a moot point since the runningbacks were decimated. Tate probably came in more polished than any other quarterback Iowa has had. It's a good thing too. KOK deserved a lot of credit for improvising an offense around what Tate could do.

I do agree about 2008, between the excellent run blocking and the talent of Shonn Greene the team had an almost overwhelming running game that Stanzi could lean on while he settled in. I think we will still see some solid running out of this years backs though.
