From article:

- Iowa coach Fran McCaffery really believes his team will need a tangible contribution from sophomore guard Josh Oglesby next season if the Hawkeyes are to have a chance to reach the NCAA Tournament. “He’s a critical, critical piece,â€￾ McCaffery said of Oglesby, who averaged 6.4 points per game last year as a freshman. “We need to replace some of the outside shooting we lost with Matt Gatens. Josh should be able to do some of that.â€￾ Oglesby, who had 24 last year at Indiana could be the first guard off the bench next year for Iowa, who should have a legitimate chance to win around 20 games.

Translation: JO will see a lot of minutes this year and Fran would like to add a shooter for 2013- see Price or Jok.

I have nightmares of J.O. shot faking from the 3pt line, taking 1 dribble and launching.
If he can catch and shoot, I will be very happy.

I still love his turnaround fadeaway jump shot from the middle. He makes it almost every time. Very difficult to stop.....

He is a very important piece of the puzzle. When he adjusts, not having to play in Mike Gaten's shadow, Josh will come into his own. He has a pure jump shot with excellent form.....

It all remains to be seen. I personally have high hopes. Can't help myself.....

:)

The comment i found most interesting is the writer predicting that josh will come off the bench. Wonder if he is basing that from a comment fran may have made.

In Fran's system it probably doesn't matter who starts, whoever earns it in practice, but there is a lot of capable talent on the bench at any time in the game. Fresh troops coming off the bench ready and raring to go should take its toll on the opposition.....

And there are those players who play better off the bench when they get a feel for the way the game is going, make their adjustments on the bench and then come in to wreak havoc.....

Fran has a very nice problem to handle with so much talent on the team. The combinatons are many and we will see them all eventually.....

I get that it matters who finishes but i believe and im willing to agree most coaches agree you want your best players to play the most minutes and typically the best way to do that is to start the best players. I look for josh to provide the role of a sharp shooter off the bench. However, as ive stated before, his defense and lack of quickness concerns me on D and i view him as a liability.

JO's a guy who if he's hitting could play 25+ minutes, if he's not, he'll get less then 10 minutes of PT.

Perhaps I am alone, but I really do not see Josh Oglesby as a liability.....

Might not have Mike Gesell and Adam Woodbury on the team without Josh's diplomacy....

I'm with ya jack. Oglesby is not a liability. He did struggle a bit last year but I'm definitely positive he will be much improved.

I like Oglesby, but I don't see a conceivable lineup in which he starts unless somebody else gets injured.

Agree. If he shows even flashes of Matt Gatens, we should be thankful. I think Josh still needs a year of seasoning to be a big time contributor.

You really have to marvel at the job Coach McCaffery and his staff have done in such a short period of time. They have accumulated a lot of talent with which to strategize the games and situations. It wasn't too long ago that if one of the starters got into trouble, you would look at the bench and see players that just didn't belong in the league and certainly weren't going to come in and help. Now he has the options to mix and match his personnel depending on the game situation and who was having a good night. Oglesby is another great option.

It wasn't too long ago you looked at our starters and some of them didn't belong in the league. Thankfully, times change quickly in basketball. I think we can say that all of our players belong now. Fran is most certainly the man.

Whole new ballgame this year. I have the ultimate confidence in Josh. He is the first top 150 player to commit to the Hawks and shows flashes of excellence. His passing might be the best on the team, and he has that deadly jump shot. Remember Nobody hits all their three pointers. I don't think Josh will have a problem coming off the bench if that is how it works out. I believe this team believes in one another and simply want to get on the floor, whether starting or not, to pummel the opponent....

:)

Disagree, Iowa has to have a couple of shooters on the floor for Marble/White to be at their best this season. Also, he is lightyears better than Eric May. Also, Josh is a very good ball handler and passer, probably the next best passer behind Gesell.
The good news, Iowa does have plenty of options on the bench this year no matter who starts, something of a new thing and it is a good thing.

I still feel the starting lineup will be: Gesell, Oglesby, Marble, White, Olaseni...replace Olaseni with Woodbury would be my only change...and that was my initial thought.
A traditional lineup with a true center and White is simply better than Basabe and McCabe.

Nobody's unseating Gesell and Marble in the backcourt as far as I can tell, and nobody's starting ahead of White. That leaves Oglesby fighting for minutes with McCabe, Basabe, May, Clemmons, Ingram, Woodbury and Olaseni. I'd rather see McCabe at the wing at this point, and down low start either Basabe, Olaseni or Woodbury. Oglesby is one-dimensional. McCabe can do a lot more and at least last season, was a better shooter (44.9% to Oglesby's 37.2% from three).

I have Marble in the lineup, nobody is unseating him, the fact is that White is a better player than McCabe and Basabe, those two will be great role players off the bench. The effect may be that Olaseni may be on the short end of playing time as I think Woodbury will play quite a bit even if he doesn't start. The improvement of Olaseni is what will determine who gets the least playing time and I really think Meyer will be redshirted.

You think Oglesby is one-dimensional and McCabe isn't?

McCabe cannot pass, his dribbling skills are not much better than May's, but he can shoot the three ball. He also struggles catching the ball on the move, or in traffic. You really think he is a better option on the wing than Oglesby because he shoots better? If you think Oglesby can't play defense either apparently you haven't been watching McCabe, he can't defend big guys not moving his feet, how do you think he will defend any player he plays against on the wing? Don't think I am overreacting, I just don't agree with you at all. I like McCabe in the role of playing on the 2nd unit to provide all kinds of matchup issues with other teams 4/5 players. That is where he can be utilized with his quality shooting and running the floor.
Look, he has started a lot of games for Iowa, but is he a guy that you can look at and watch play and think he is a starter in the BIG? If you do, then you absolutely do not agree with me and that is okay. Here is another thing to think about, who is the better player when both are on...McCabe or Basabe...Basabe...who has a bigger impact on the team when they play well McCabe or Basabe...Basabe. I have no issues with Zach other than a group of fans that think he is better than he really is and that comes from being not very good and having little to no viable options. Iowa needs a player like McCabe to make an NCAA tourney run, but he cannot be a guy that you can depend for a night in and night out performance of worth because he hasn't done it in his career yet and he has played a ton.

Hands down Oglesby is the best passer of any of the returning players and it isn't even close, his problem early in the season was players weren't looking for the ball...I remember one that hit McCabe in the face and another that went right by Basabe in the same game. Oglesby had good ball handling ability and he has a nice turnaround jumpshot from 14/16 ft. He will make a big leap from year 1 to year 2.

Iowa's outside shooting will be improved with Gesell on board and when Oglesby makes his leap from year 1 to year 2. He watched what it takes to be a player in the BIG by watching how hard Gatens worked. I don't think he took that lightly by watching how well Gatens played last season. The other thing that Ogelsby has going for him is that he is highly intelligent basketball player, that could be the most important factor for him when all is said and done.

McCabe is a much better rebounder than Oglesby. I noticed you left that out of the equation. McCabe also puts forth more effort than anyone on the floor, and is bigger and more athletic than Oglesby. You criticize McCabe for not demonstrating that he is somebody you can depend on night in and night out. Has Oglesby ever demonstrated this? Did anyone really fit that bill last year besides Marble, White and Gatens?

And I expect Oglesby to be better next year but he just has some physical limitations that I think will keep him out of the starting lineup at least until Marble and McCabe graduate. Oglesby strikes me a Devan Bawinkel type. Good at what he does, doesn't try to force parts of his game that aren't there, can shoot the rock if open, but needs to work on a quicker release.
