Fran has 4 schollys to give ...3 this year and 1 next year or some combination of that. I hope he finds a gem of a pg out there still, and then uses one more if he finds a guy that is truly worthy...maybe Wilkins...or,saves it so we have 3 more to give next year, when he can start to re-cast the whole roster into a long quick, speedy group that fits his style.

Today was a vital first step in that process...gonna be a long haul, but have to trust that Fran knows how to rebuild..and will win more games each passing year.

It would be very nice for Iowa to get the respect of our own state's top recruits year after year again. I honestly believe they would love to be Hawkeyes but just couldn't be under the situation. It has been a train wreck for so long.
I will remember the Fran's comment about Fuller leaving. He said Fuller was a good kid and that it was too bad he was moving on, but he would just go find someone better. Loved it. I believed in Alford... I believed in Lickliter... third time has to be the charm?

The 3000 pound elephant is that what this line-up really needs is turnover, particularly on the front line.

It would be nice to add a JUCO pg, but only if it's someone who improves the ball club. Of course it would be nice to add a Wilkins or some other athletic big. I've not seen Neari play, but he could possibly step in and give some minutes when Cully needs a blow. Sounds like we may mix it up and play some zone, so that will allow us to have a little bit shorter bench. Competitors like playing lots of minutes anyway. Cully, May, and Gatens are a solid core. If we can get good minutes, defense, hustle out of Cole/Brommer we could be ok. Also, I think any good contributions from true frosh will be gravy. A key is that we need to be fun to watch (fans in the stands), competitive, and win a few games to make Iowa basketball appealing again as we have some terrific talents in Randle and Paige we are targeting.

Hopefully Archie is athletic and a pleasant surprise, but know one really knows much about him! but it would be nice if he's a sleeper. Salter would be awesome! hopefully he's got his grades in check at J.C. great board!! longtime listener-first time caller.

Archie is an unknown to most of us. It sounds like he may be better suited for Fran's style than Lick's. We'll see soon enough.

I don't think we can start Payne, Gatens, and May again next year. There is just not enough ball-handling in that group, and Gatens and May both struggle getting their shots off the bounce. We need a combo guard or point guard (Cully can play combo) to start and move either Gatens or May to 6th man. We must have two players that can break their man down on the dribble. Cully seemed to have more of a score first mentality anyways, I think he might thrive if he is given some freedom.

May has all the attributes you look for in a 6th man. Athletic, energy, plays good D. He would be a nice guy to bring off the bench to increase the energy level. And Marble comes off the bench as our 5th back court player, giving him some solid minutes as a freshman.

Front court is a mess. Lots of warm bodies, let them all compete and hopefully we can find to legit post players and a couple of serviceable back-ups.

I don't think we can afford to have May come off the bench...he's probably the best athlete we have...(Evan turner was even impressed.)

I think the 4 below are starters. Who the 5th is I don't know....We really need a another PG and a big man for next year, IMO.

Jarryd Cole - 6’7” Senior
Matt Gatens - 6’5” Junior
Eric May - 6’5” Sophomore
Cully Payne - 6’1” Sophomore

The problem is we do know about Archie. There is plenty of film on him from his JC years and eye witness reports from PTL. Think Davis and Palmer.

Unless the 5th player in this group is a quality big man this is a team that will not win many games. We need a lot of depth but i dont know how much quality is out there. Next year will be ugly but hopefully improvement will be seen in 2011

Who? Who is the starter who replaces Gatens and/or May?

The world is not ideal. Good grief, you have to play with the cards you are dealt. There is no mythical savior in the wings. The rest of your post is thoughtful, but I just think Fran has to put his best players on the floor and adjust the game plan to their strengths/weaknesses. Both Gatens and May are plainly among our best 5 players.

Thankfully, I have much greater confidence in this Coach's ability to make those adjustments, both strategically and in-game.

Mel Basabe is a big get for the Hawkeyes, not sure if he is the 5th man or not, but Anthony Slater is the next guy we are after and he may be stealing most of Payne's minutes.
Slater played HS ball in Tallahassee, Fl and has played the last two seasons at Iowa Western CC. He is ranked the #1 juco pg in the country and #3 juco overall. If we get him and one of our bigs can play at a Big Ten level, then we are a possible NCAA team!

Go Fran go!

Well we do have 3 open scholarships? And we are rumored to be recruiting JUCO guards. My thought would be we recruit an athletic guard that can dribble and start him with Payne and either May/Gatens. I'm not asking for a savior, a Chauncey Leslie, Jason Price, Mike Henderson talent would be an improvement. We need that skill set. Gatens/May don't have that skill set.

Hey but if you want to trot out a bunch of players that can't dribble or even shake their man with ball screens again next year and watch us struggle to score or get good shot than so be it. But you can't compete in the Big 10 if you don't have guys that can dribble the basketball. Gatens and May are fine players but neither are well suited to be second guards at the college level. They play best off the ball, and when set up by others. We have one guy on this team that can get to where we wants off the dribble, Payne. We need another one desperately and he needs to start, to diversify our skills on the court.

If we play with both Gatens and May we'll need to run motion offense and set-plays, with lots of off-ball screening and cutting. We'll need to grind it out and have lots of catch-n-shoot. Any hopes for a free-form dribble penetration attack simply won't work.

wow...I wish I could think this way. I do love the thought of all this. But even with the Juco player, I still do not see us winning more then 15 games.

For sure we will put our best basketball players out there. Granted it will be nice to add some pieces here or there, but we won't be a grind it out team. From what I've heard Coach say, we will look to score in transition, before we face a set defense. Much easier looks/uncontested shots are possible in that situation. Not every offense needs to be the dribble drive motion offense; you can win in any league playing any type of basketball. Of course it helps if people can handle the basketball, but there are many ways to combat shortcomings in personnel w/ regards to this. It was frustrating to watch us play vs. the Gophers last year when it looked like our kids weren't even taught how to break a press. Also, depending on what type of press you face, dribbling is the last thing you want to do. I'm very excited to see how our coaching staff/roster finalizes. After that, I feel that Coach will coach 'em up and we'll compete. Go Hawks!
