The kid can just flat stroke the golf ball. He carries his 3-wood over 290. Are you kidding me? He stripes it at every pin. When he is on his game, there is no one that makes the game look so easy. I have become a big fan of him and hope he can play well through the weekend as well. He certainly has all the game to run away from any field (even WITH Mickelson playing well).

Rory is currently blowing the field away. He is at 10 under par at the US Open... ridiculous. I can't imagine he'll choke again like he did at the Masters.

Careful. Let's not forget that this is a US Open and it can reach up, grab you and spit you out. Rory has played 29 holes so far. 43 more to go.:D Far, Far from over.

He also has been able to make the putts to save par. My back has never been close to loose enough to swing like R Mc.

He did the same thing at the Masters this year, blew the field away for 3 days and blew up on Sunday. The course will be ultra tough this weekend, they won't water the greens at all. I take my hat off to him for playing like he has, but it's only Friday at the US Open, lots can happen.

Rory led the British Open after 1 round last year as well.

He can probably play 4 over from here out and still win. He is in the driver seat

He is playing well right now, there is no question about that. The weekend IMO will still be interesting, this course is very demanding. How will he hold up mentally this will be the thing to watch. He has shown in past majors that this is a weakness.

For ratings and entertainment purposes you kinda have to hope he does falter some. I wish no ill luck against the kid. I just love watching major tournaments for the drama on the weekends and he is running away right now. He's 2 under since my last post....

He now has the record. -13 is the lowest score at any point in the history of the US Open. If he fails to win this tournament, it will be one of the greatest let downs in sports history.

Golf gods must not appreciate the scoring exhibition. He cards a Double Bogey on 18.. Leader at -11.

One of the greatest performances in history and I am stuck on my iPhone watching Kutcher and Garcia. Why even offer the video feed, if you are going to pull that crap!

what does this even mean?

Tiger who? How would you like to be that Day kid who shoots -8 at the U.S. Open and gets 2nd BY 8 FRICKIN' STROKES. So much for those who say Tiger needs to be in a tournament to make it interesting. There are a lot of good young players right now.

I wish the US Open would have been more difficult. There wasn't much of a penalty for missing the fairway, the greens were soft, and the ball funneled toward the hole. Jason Day(2nd place) went the last 45 holes without a bogey. There's no way anyone does that on a typical US Open course.

I agree that it was "easier" than the typical US Open course but so what. Everyone played the same course. It doesn't take away what Rory did this week. I'm not saying that you are hinting at that but why do you care?

He also has a swing that is set up to be pretty productive for a long time...just not the violent stresses on the body that Tiger had from an early stage.

His performance this weekend was one of the most awe inspiring golf exhibitions I have ever seen, certainly since Tigers 1997 Masters.

It's just that the U.S. Open is supposed to be grueling. There are few courses that test a golfer as thoroughly as a U.S. Open course. And this year, it was easy. It would be one thing if McElroy was the only one to be shooting lights out like that. Then he would just be an absolute freak of nature (he kind of is, anyway). But when the average winning score at the Open is about -5, it's pretty safe to say that this course was relatively easy (Eight players finished with a score of -5 or better, and the winner shot a ridiculous -16).

Sandy Tatum, who was in charge of prepping Winged Foot for the 1974 Open, said it best:

"We're not trying to humiliate the best players in the world. We're simply trying to identify who they are."

There are a lot of good, young golfers out there right now. But this year's Open was hardly the kind of test that measures up to those typically presented by the USGA.
