Roles for next years team

I hate to be that guy, but this team is gonna struggle. Too much youth, and not enough shooters. The good thing is the team should improve all year long, and hopefully be poised to have a good season the following year.

There's always got to be one in every forum. How dare you bring realism to the discussion. :)

The thing I believe that separates us from Neb, Minny, PSU, & NW is Jok. None of those teams return a 2nd team all Big 10 player who can go get you 18 a night and shoot 40 plus % from 3. If Jok doesn't return, we are in some trouble.

Iowa was has been to three strait tourneys, NW has never been to the tournament, that is an objective statement.

You are entitled to your opinion, and you may be right, however your opinion is not fact.

This.

I'm optimistic because we have a likely 1st Team All Conference player and much of our youth will be entering year 2 or 3 in the program...not all are true freshmen.

Looking at our current roster objectively, its an NIT roster as best. We are putting a lot of faith in young players who were not heavily recruited.

The team lacks ball handlers, shot creators, interior size, shotblocking, and post defense. It has wing/forward length in spades.

Sometimes the truth can be painful. We will see what Fran can do with these guys.......or not. Having said that they still will way out perform the Lickliter teams.

Going to agree, if the team gets to the NIT I will say that is a good thing, I am looking more around a .500 record over the entire season...

You bring up some decent arguments about the bottom tier teams improving, which will make it tougher on Iowa.

Again, your reasons are still no more objective than other posters. To begin with recruiting rankings are not always accurate. Look at that OG kid on Indy this year, Wow.

Nebraska, Penn State and Northwestern all bring in two good recruits each. Northwestern really only returns McIntosh. Nebraska returns White and Webster. I think we'll be better than Minnesota for sure and hopefully and Penn State

I'm not assuming that Jok will be back. Even if he does come back I think we are a bubble team at best.

So looking at next year IMO...

Definitely finish ahead of us - Indiana, Michigan State, Maryland, Wisconsin and Michigan

Likely to finish behind us - Rutgers, Minnesota, Illinois, and Penn State

Battling for 6th through 10th - Purdue, Iowa, Ohio State, Northwestern and Nebraska

You could probably put Penn State in our group. They'll have some good guards with Garner coming back and Carr coming in

I'm generally an optimist too. The team should be pretty good and fun to watch next year. This years team pretty much went as Uthoff went. He was a good player for Iowa, but they appear that they will have a lot more offensive options next year. Williams, Moss, Cook, Wagner, Kriener, and Pemsl all seem to have more fire power than Clemmons, Gesell, and Woodbury. Cook will only a true freshman, but he is one strong guy, and he appeared to play within the system his high school team had for him. I don't know how strong Kriener and Pemsl are but they aren't skinny guys. Didn't Kriener and Pemsl play for the same summer league team that Woodbury did? If they did they are probably well founded on the defensive aspects of the game. Woodbury did pretty good defensively when he was a true freshman. Fran and the coaching staff have done good jobs with a lot less talent, and about the same experience.

Well at least your honest about being optimistic.

Your putting a lot of faith in young kids that never have ever played at a college level. Ricky Davis was the last time I saw an significant impact player as a freshman. You could argue that Aaron White made an important impact. The point is that Freshmen usually are not going to do much even if they are pretty good.

I hope they surprise but I do not expect it to happen. This could be a very bumpy ride even if Jok returns. If Jok doesn't return I hope everyone has a good chiropractor.

There is a reason they play the games. I wouldn't say I'm really putting a lot of faith in the young kids, but I like how the coaching staff utilizes the talent they have. I think they have a lot to work with next year. Most of the true freshmen are playing close to the basket, and that is easier to learn. Except for Bohannon the other players have been in the system and in the weight room for at least a year.

I think that if Cook can have a similar year to what Ethan Happ did at Wisconsin, that will help us out greatly. Also in the Indiana game at home Williams seemed to look like he had a high ceiling and some growth potential. I like Wagner's ability to rebound and just disturb in the paint area, but think he lacks being able to score with his back to the basket. We will need Jok to be able to score with his shooting but also use his shooting to create other shots, and setting up others for shots. I hope Moss can be a slasher type player, and take some of the load off of Jok if teams form their defense around Jok. Finally, I think if either Bohannon, Kriener, or Pemsl can come in and be a solid, reliable player off the bench, that could help a lot.
Overall I think we will have an average year, finish from 6 to 10 in the big ten and struggle to make the tourney.

Dont get me wrong Mr. T as I hope your are right. Maybe this will be a breakout class that comes in. Would love to see Iowa's version of when Michigan had that great freshmen class many years ago. I think they were refered to as the fabulous five.

I agree and even though I am not a gambling man I would wager we will finish closer to 10th rather than 6th. Do people realize how many hours of experience we just graduated? We also lost a great deal of height. Oh I hope some of the younger guys can greatly surprise. Although Woody wasn't the offensive type player I had hoped he would be he did a good job rebounding the opponents missed shots. That component will be greatly missed with the loss of him and Gabe in just two years.

We will see a lot of zone defense from Fran next year. We might also see a solid 9 man rotation to try and wear teams down late in games.
This team is limited in many ways. We won't make the tourny unless some players make quantum leaps and we get better coaching.

Jok will be a 3yr starter.
Uhl has played in 4 NCAA tournament games
Jones is in his fourth year (5th?) of college BB
Baer probably the headiest player on the team last year
Wagner, Williams & BE have 1yr of experience and played in some hostile environments
Moss has one year of experience in the system

Guys we are not that inexperienced.

There is no doubt in my mind that experience helped us some this year, but it didn't mean much by the end of the year. Less experience teams seemed to have caught up to us.

MG and Woody had some serious offensive limitations, and to an extent Sapp did as well. The loss of JU will hurt. I for one am excited to add some new players to the mix. In my mind, Cook will be the only true freshman we rely on for big minutes.

I will be happy with the Very Good 5.
