Robert Gallery article

I’d have to go through signing up. I may later. I read about Gallery’s post-NFL situation and it’s really too bad. He was thrown on to the worst team possible at the time and I feel it wasn’t warranted but someone always had him as one of the biggest draft busts. As I said I don’t feel it was warranted. He played his ass off for years. Always will be one of my favorite Hawks of all time

Reminds me a great deal of Chuck Long.

Both had all the tools, all the confidence, all the pedigree, all the good college coaching.

Both were drafted by loser organizations. Long was doomed when Detroit went to the "run and shoot" offense that was about a 3 year flash in the pan offense.

Both are considered to be "busts" which is both inaccurate and unfair.
Timing, organzations and coaching is everything.
They were both dealt a crappy NFL hand.

You nailed it.

Where a player goes is 99% of it for many players it seems like. You couldn't tell me had Gallery went to the Patriots at that time or if Long had gone to a better team that he coulda been a better pro. It's just totally out of their control but coaching & culture matters at all levels

Desmond King, too.

If he had gone to say, the Eagles or Patriots right outta the gate like Cooper did I think he could've made a name for himself and gotten a long term deal at a place that values players instead of just keeping the stadium bills paid.

This is one of those where it's tough to read and still be excited about football.
Yep. I read Hlas' article when it came out (not the Athletic piece), but the takeaway on that one had nothing to do with how his NFL career unfolded from a playing perspective. Rather, it was about brain damage, rage, depression, and experimental, psychedelic drugs.

I'm right there cheering when Nwankpa or Dunker level someone. Sort of hard to reconcile the fact they are playing a game of Russian roulette, with the outcome possibly being brain damage and potentially ruined family relationships, violence and/or suicide.

I'm glad Gallery is doing better, and hope he manages to keep living a good life. It could have ended so much worse.

I wouldn't get mad if they came out and said, "In two years any forcible contact above the mid point of the jersey number is illegal and targeting will be called." I mean, how do we get taught to tackle in pee wee football to be honest?

We get taught as kids to get our shoulders and arms around a runner's legs and waist and wrap up. Why can't that be a rule? If it applies to everyone it's fair. Bring back tackling instead of trucking. You wanna know why it can't be a rule? Because the NFL would never make it a rule and then things would be too different at the next level.

I also don't know why in the tech age we live in that we don't have accelerometers in helmets that have a threshold for a certain level of 1) single instance G force, and cumulative G force over the course of a game ie. smaller consecutive impacts for OL/DL. Regardless of the situation, position, or area of the field it occurs, if your helmet takes a shot of X amount of G force during a game you come out. We have tech that can measure the spot of a live ball down to less than an inch, and track a hundred other metrics, we can do that.

If guys started coming out of games left and right because they were smacking their (or someone else's) heads on every play, guys would learn to trackle fundamentally. The game would look different, but let's not pretend football isn't unrecognizable already compared to 30 years ago.
