Rittenburg just ******* NAILED it

you do realize most high school kids think they are better than everyone else and will start over the other 5* players, right?

Absolutely, that's the hurdle, that's why I said these kids need to be convinced otherwise. Maybe they do this already, but it would seem to me that they could go through the rosters of Alabama, LSU, Florida and the like, and show these kids how many 4* recruits end up riding the bench their whole college career (or worse, get pushed out the door when someone better comes along and the roster space is needed). Present a little evidence to a recruit, you won't get the whole bunch, maybe you persuade 1 or 2, and build on something. It's a little harsh, but recruiting top talent is not for the faint of heart, or so I've read.

Thank you Hoffa.

In regards to some other posts in this thread. I think Rittenburg does a nice job covering the B1G. However, his opinions should be taken no more seriously than anyone on this message board.

No problem. I also think Rittenburg does a good job and like his work. I understand why he wrote the story he just didn't do a very good job of explaining that Iowa was moving the Florida focus to Texas, etc. Which clearly wouldn't make the story seem as "OH MY GOD" if he did.

He mentions Texas, California and Florida as being the states to get top guys from but doesn't add that Iowa will probably start recruiting Texas more.

If Woods and GD are able to get quality guys from Texas than I think staying out of Florida isn't really that big of a deal. Of course we won't know how that plays out for a few years.

I also think it might be an easier sell to get kids from Texas to Iowa rather than Florida to Iowa. We shall see. By the way how many kids to we get from Florida when Hayden was the coach?

How many recruits has ISU gotten out of Fla. this year?

2012 State 100 meter Track results

Florida Champ: 10:49
Iowa Champ: 11.39

HF talked about the near 1 second gap a lot.

An honest assessment knows that during the last Iowa good run, the defense was quite fast. The speed has really dropped off.

We have 1 guy in the state faster than that (James Harrington from Cedar Falls), but his 11.13 was running into a 6.1 headwind. Your point still stands however...

**Edit - That headwind must have been bad. Looking at the preliminary times, we had a bunch of guys faster than 11.38. Nobody near 10.49 though...

And who's job is it to sell these kids that 95% of them don't end up playing ahead of the other 5* players?

**snort**

That's recruiting.

Why not recruit, for example, Florida, and California? These states must have some of the largest contingents of high star recurits of any states in the union.

Using ISU's recruiting success as an example, to say that Florida kids won't stay in Iowa because of the distance home is a reach.

And Tim Dwight ran a 10.19 second 100 meter dash so he has the top guy in Florida beat by .3 seconds. What states does not have speed now?

Throwing Bielema in Florida was a major reason for the success of 2002-04. Quite a few Floridians played major roles on those teams. That's not a waste of resources unless the level of recruiting we've seen lately is the model for efficiency.
You realize Bielema has been gone for quite a few years now right? So how's that FL recruiter doing lately?

Rittenburg is a liberal hack. He represents one of the problems endemic in the media. He spends his time with his liberal buddies on the coasts. He understands nothing about life in the heartland and how good players from the Midwest are.

Maybe you should take a look at the big ten states that voted Obama in the last election.

I think Hoffa already alluded to the point that we are not completely ignoring the state of Florida. We just aren't going to have a coach spend a ton of his precious recruiting travel time in that state. Recruiting is often about relationships and contacts. Our current staff now has many moe of those relationships in the Texas and East coast areas. We haven't had much success retaining kids from Florida lately or landing kids who made a great impact. While other schools are overfishing the pond that is Flroida that only means that other talent in different areas is being overlooked. I have no issues with the staff focusing on other areas than Florida.

As I understand it a big part of recruiting is establishing a sound credible relationship with high school coaches. The HS coaches have a lot of influence with the recruits.

I believe this is the thinking KF and the staff have exacly...and i agree with it. Who knows but i like it...

How about the Tx, Oh, Nj, and Pa champs? We will recruit there to.

Serious question for the board..how many Fl recruits have we had in about the last 20 years.
