Iowa's retreat from Florida a B1G problem - Big Ten Blog - ESPN

From the article

It's great to see coaches develop talent and several Big Ten programs, including Iowa, have done that well over the years. But there's a ceiling for teams trying to win with overlooked recruits from the heartland. Too many Big Ten teams -- not just Iowa -- seem to fall into this trap.

As I said the other day, I don't think this is KF being lazy, I just think he has lost his way in rebuilding the program.

When you get too comfortable you end up napping. When KF wakes up from his nap he's liable to be looking up at everyone else in the conference wondering how they got there.

Nobody knows now to build a B1G contender like this guy.

Seriously, though. I'm definitely not a KF fan. He's grown fat and happy with his multi-million dollar contract, and now the program is on a slow slide into obscurity.

But in this case, I agree with KF. A coach dedicated to recruiting FL is a waste of resources. With the attrition this program has suffered recently, we need recruits who are going to stay with the program. I believe we can get all we need from Texas, Ohio, Chicago, St Louis, Pennsylvania, areas.

And generally, I don't even care much anymore. KF has pretty much Licklitered this program as far as I care. Which is about as far as one of GD's patented 3 yd outs.

I disagree 11-8-7-4, I think we're on the fast track there.

Rittenburg is a liberal hack. He represents one of the problems endemic in the media. He spends his time with his liberal buddies on the coasts. He understands nothing about life in the heartland and how good players from the Midwest are.

He mentions Texas, California and Florida as being the states to get top guys from but doesn't add that Iowa will probably start recruiting Texas more.

If Woods and GD are able to get quality guys from Texas than I think staying out of Florida isn't really that big of a deal. Of course we won't know how that plays out for a few years.

I also think it might be an easier sell to get kids from Texas to Iowa rather than Florida to Iowa. We shall see. By the way how many kids to we get from Florida when Hayden was the coach?

Where Iowa is in 2015 will tell us whether the program has returned to prominence or not. By then, all the changes will have had sufficient time to settle in, the offense, the defense, the new coaches, and the last 2 years recruiting classes will be juniors and seniors. Iowa will have either turned the corner or they'll be stuck where they're at now. We can measure whether there's been improvement this year and next, but by 2015, Iowa will be defined. By then, we'll know whether Ferentz has rebuilt the program or if the program is stuck in mediocrity. Right now, I have no clue where they'll be.

What in the hell does politics have to do with this? AR was spot on when, at the end of the article, he said "In recruiting, you follow the talent. You flock to it. You compete for it. You don't turn your back on it."

It makes absolutely no sense to ignore one of the 3 most talent rich states when what you need the most is talent. This is doubly true since we don't have a single player from California, often regarded as talent rich as Florida and Texas.

Again look for more kids from Texas making the trip north.

Read the sig.

You cannot pick and choose certain years to make a trend without looking at the entire KF record at Iowa or you miss the actual true pattern.

7/8 wins is the dividing line.

Your first two in your list were actually positive years.

Your second two are just the first two of a normal downturn.

This year, you will see the number end up being somewhere in the 5-7 range.

The year after that will be 8 or more.

Beyond that, if less Florida means more Texas, that is okay. But giving up completely on area where you have had strong prior success is not a particularly optimistic sign.

Would you shut the **** up about your pattern prediction already? We get it.

I don't see this program improving anytime soon. I think the game passed Ferentz by a long time ago. He always had Norm Parker to fall back on. He doesn't have that luxury anymore.

I have no problem with swapping Texas for Florida as a recruiting focus IF in fact that's what we're doing. It takes time to build up HS coaching relationships so you don't want to do this lightly. I'm sure the likes of Abdul Hodge and Brad Banks will not be happy with this move.

But Texas is massively talent-rich, and arguably an easier "get" than Florida kids. If you widen the lens a bit, you could equally argue we had "gotten away" from our modest Texas pipeline of the Hayden years. Let's get after the next Big Dave Hudson of Waxahachie, Texas!

This and going off of early offers, Texas is up there with IL, OH, PA, MD, and MO.

It isn't about his contract - stop talking about his ******* paycheck. The guy wants to win. Anyone who believes differently is an idiot not worth discussing this with.

He isn't comfortable or happy with mediocrity. Anyone who believes differently is an idiot not worth discussing this with.

What he is, is unsure about how to go about rebuilding a program in the year 2013. When he was hired, email was still relatively new. Now, most people refuse to pick up the phone. The guy is old school to the bone, and the new world of today's youth is not the guy's strong suit.

Iowa should be going 10-2 every other year and competing for championships. That's the bottom line, here. We are IOWA.

This is exactly right. My problem is I do waste time arguing with people who actually think KF doesn't care about winning or losing.....
