RIP Keith Jackson

I’m getting old all the great play-by-play guys I grew up with radio and television are dead or really, really old. A lost art of just calling a game without the need to drop pop culture references to show how hip you are....... how in touch you are. Keith Jackson could connect with an audience simply by calling the game.

Before anyone labels me “get off my lawn guy” I know it is a different world now and everyone needs to be “entertained” and I get that. When icons like KJ pass away I get a little nostalgic that’s all.:)
Right there with ya. It's so weird because guys like him did entertain me. It's certainly a sign of us all getting older when guys like him are passing and many others retiring.

I'm just about 40 and listened to way more radio as a kid then tv. So Zabel was the first main voice I listened to. But I also listened to Harry Carry a lot and the MN Twins announcers John Gordon and Herb Carneil. And the Chicago Bulls guy I can't say his name. Always said Kaboom when someone made a 3 (usually BJ Armstrong)
So that's my nostalgic post for the day

Full Game of Keith Jackson calling an Iowa game

If memory serves me correctly this game included my favorite Keith Jackson line ever. After Iowa was way ahead, an Illinois receiver named Sean Wax caught a meaningless touchdown pass, and celebrated like it was a game winner. KJ said something along the lines of "Son, you may have just won a battle, but you are sure losing the war!"

Very true but I almost can't blame a kid for that. That stage back then more so than now it was as big of a deal as it gets. Practically on par with the Superbowl. Of course a score like that didn't mean anything on the macro level. But for him and other kids like him it's the culmination of a lot.

If Keith Jackson was calling the game, you knew it was a big game. His voice = college football.

Back in the 80's when winning was a new thing, you just knew Iowa was legit when we started getting Mr, Keith Jackson to call an Iowa game. Best voice, like honey BBQ, best laid-back style ever. Didn't feel the need to fill every space, just let the natural tension of the game soak in. There are good announcers out there today but no one that is college football personified like the legendary Jackson was.

The man was the most unbiased play by play guy ever. He showed absolutely no favoritism to any team while he was doing a game. USC could have been playing Slippery Rock and he would have been equally complimentary to both teams.
