Ricky Rubio: Bust or Star?

He is coming off the bench for Regal Barcelona? How is he suppose to make an impact on a NBA squad? He is going to have to learn how to shoot, not just shoot, but score period.

Rumor has it that Cuban loves the kid and is willing to deal for him. That kind of environment, learning under Kidd, under Beroa, Carlisle is an excellent teacher that would be the ideal scenario for Rubio to have success.

leaning toward bust, however if he can get into situation where there isn't any immediate expectations then he has a decent shot.

his stats in Europe are not good for a lottery pick, so you would think his averages would come down in the NBA. However, they keep saying his game isn't suited as well for Euro ball, but better suited for NBA....whatever. ;) I think he can be a good-great playmaker, IF he becomes a scoring threat. Right now, he can't shoot worth a lick, so it's going to be hard to create when your defender can sag off and not respect your ability to shoot.

Right now, under Rambis they play the Triangle offense, which doesn't really require a dynamic point guard so he will be in the wrong system right off the bat. That is assuming Rambis is the coach....

I hope he does well, but its easy to say he will be a bust....

good point about Rambis' offense, but we don't even know if Rambis is coming back,

Neither, his euro stats are very similar to Brandon Jennings, he's a better passer and defender than Jennings, so I think he can become a solid starter, but won't be an All Star.

He'll never live up to the hype he is generating, but that isn't his fault. I think he will be serviceable and a nice draw the fans up north. Lord knows they need something.

Bust. I doubt he makes it to the states.

Dude, do you try to be wrong about things?

I am not big on Rubio but that all comes from him being an 18 year old in the Olympics. As others have said he needs to get better with his left and a reliable jump shot otherwise it will be tough for him in the NBA.

Now if they get rid of Rambis that will help him greatly, as he is the opposite of a triangle pg.

Watching his highlights makes me think he won't get those passes off when the competition isn't a bunch of slow white guys. We shall see, I just hope there is an NBA season next year.

I think his transition to the NBA game is going to be horrific for him, but he'll be serviceable eventually.

I hope I'm wrong tho and we witness a euro-pistol-pete.

You cannot translate his euro stats to mean anything. Just look up Brandon Jennings numbers when he was over there. That being said no way he lives up to the hype cause its out of control. He will make a few all star teams but wont be till hes 26 or 27.

Shouldn't the real story be why the H*** can't we get the same kind analysis on our Hawk players or recruits? I mean there are people who basically make their living of covering Hawkeye sports. Shouldn't we expect this type of professionalism?

Good point CAAR, I'm guessing the people weighing in on this thread have seen but a few highlights in the four letter and now are an expert on his game. There's something about euro players that make imaginations work OT. What's it been since he was drafted, 3 years? That probably helps add to the myth.

I'm thinking that he will be a solid player early in his career, but not so sure about being an all-star. Like others I'm a believer that his game doesn't benefit the euro style of play and that he will have a Brandon Jennings like transition into the NBA. I hope the kid has a solid career.

Brandon Jennings Euro stats: 7.6 ppg, 1.6 rb, 1.6 ast, 1.2 stl, 45.7% FG, 26.8% 3pt
Brandon Jennings NBA Year1: 15.5 ppg, 3.4 rb, 5.7 ast, 1.3 stl, 37.1% FG, 37.4% 3pt
Brandon Jennings NBA Year2: 16.2 pt, 3.7 rb, 4.8 ast, 1.5 stl, 39.0% FG, 32.3% 3pt
Ricky Rubio European Stats : 4.8 ppg, 4.8 rb, 3.2 ast, 1.6 stl, 32.0% FG, 25.9% 3pt

Things of note: Rubio's team in Europe played a slow down, half-court game which was not a fit for his game. He is best in up-tempo game.

Jennings stats skyrocketed upon his transition from Europe to NBA.

Also, regarding Euro stats, they define an assist differently: you are awarded an assist when you pass the ball and the player scores without a dribble. In the NBA, you can take an immediate dribble and the passer is rewarded with an assist. (something along those lines....)

If a guy can't shoot, he can't shoot. You don't have to be an expert, a Spainerd, a Regal Barcelona fan to notice this. I am not sure what Caarhawk was getting at....if he was taking a dig at the posters, Jon, the local media or what?
