Rick "the Rocket" Mount v. Iowa in 1970

Best Iowa team I ever had the pleasure of watching. Ralph would sometimes..literally.. take the air out of the ball during practice so the players wouldn't dribble and would concentrate on pure passing. I still get a sick feeling when I think about the Jacksonville game. It remains by far my lowest point in Iowa sports and it happened 42 years ago.

Pembrook Burrows made me one depressed teenager after that heartbreaking loss. also was hard to stomach when Ralph took off for Oregon State. No queastion 1970 team was special bunch of players !

Serious question from a youngin. Why did he leave Iowa for Oregon st?

I read an article that stated the reason the Millers left Iowa City was the harsh Iowa Winter weather . The 1970 winter was an exceptionally cold one and Ralph's wife was not real enthused with the Iowa Winters . When the coach at Oregon Sttae retired the Millers jumped at the chance to live in a more moderate climate. Ralph's first 3 years at Corvallis were not the best but the school stuck with him and the rest is history .

Ralph hated the Iowa winters. The '69-'70 winter was extremely brutal with temperatures reaching twenty below zero several times. He also had an inner ear problem that was aggravated by the harsh winter. Ralph missed the middle half of the Big Ten season because of the ear problem.

Pembrook Burrows III later appeared in SI as a Highway Patrolman in Where are they now, I still hate Jacksonville even though I was only ten years old at the time.

Besides more money, didn't Lute and Bobbi hate the Iowa winters?

Money really wasn't an issue. Lute had created a monster & Iowa City had become a fishbowl. Lute & Bobbi couldn't even go out to dinner. Plus, the winters also had a lot to do with his leaving.

As I remember one of the reasons Ralph left was the problems in the athletic program. It was at the time of the Evy- Nagel feud. Maybe someone remembers this better than I do and could enlighten us.

Ralph was also a big time smoker which probably didnt help his ear's and sinuses. Hey the guy was great at Wichita State. I watched his shocker teams play drake at vets in mid 60s.

He was great at Iowa and had a couple no 1 teams at Oregon st.

Great success.

I saw an article about Pembrook Burrows working as a Highway Patrolman. I was nine and that loss crushed me. I guess it was a sign of things to come in NCAA tourneys.
