Rhabdo at Oregon

The reason Penn State is now referred to by most people as Ped State - is because loyal Nittany Lions let things get out of control. You see it in politics all the time: "Yeah, I think we should get rid of the constitution now that we have our man in the whitehouse." - "Yeah, I think we should use the nuclear option in the senate."

Well, now who has those powers? Ya should've thought about the future. But too many fans are just like Barta, completely unable or unwilling to see the road they are on.

Josh you are equally as bad by beating the drum that Barta is somehow stupid or easy to take advantage. Any program that gave that award like that.....well u know the non homer real answer.

Bitch please......

Name KF other awards by year, did you ever care about them before or after?

Did I just destroy Josh.....

Homerism at its best. Got to hand it you ...your great at it. I must have missed some of G Ds awards until the master plan went into effect. Maybe u can tell us sbout other obscure awards.:D

It isn't Homerism. I don't think that the Oregon coaches are systemic monster like at Pedo St. either. Does that make me a Oregon Duck homer?

You are a self admitted old dude. How did your two a days go back in the day? For me it wasn't uncommon to be pushed very hard, by a standard that isn't acceptable now. Water was looked at as a weakness, coaches used to put hands on players. Lots of things used to go on that no longer do.

My point is those workout were used a lot back in the day. It wasn't to injury kids, or put their health at risk, it was to make them bigger and stronger and tougher, and was what we thought at the time was doing that. Now if Iowa would have kept doing that, after what happened, then I would have a HUGE PROBLEM with everyone involved with those decision. Instead what Iowa did was go back to the drawing board, re design those workouts, and are now embracing technology that even further protects the players.

Whats being an old dude have to do with it? If couse it depends on your definition. Btw my bmi is low 20s and resting heart rate is under 30...and would guess i could out run uou...even w my knee brace..

Its not your bird comments...its the homerism.

If your resting heart rate is under 30 you should see a doctor

I've been checked. I'm a runner, lift and am pretty darn fit except for a stupid knee due to sports. Thx for suggesting it though. I can also really shut things down when resting...and bring up the heart rate fast when exercising. When we were first married the wife (an RN) would take my pulse at night, sometimes waking me up.

which then led to a faster heart rate soon after, I assume?:D

I recall two a days, with no water breaks. You wouldn't dare be shamed into asking for water. It's a wonder more kids didn't collapse in football camps every late summer. Of course things change with training and coaching. I'd say that the changes are occurring much more rapidly today - things done even 3 years ago are probably frowned upon. No way was Doyle trying to hurt a kid. With that said, it was peculiar that Ferentz decided to make him assistant of the year that year - it was too obvious what he was trying to do - it highlighted what had happened.

Pretty sure all Ferentz was trying to do was rebuild Doyle's confidence which no doubt took a hit from such an incident. No easy way to come to terms with your direct actions leading to people's injury. Especially ones that you care deeply about, which I believe Doyle does for every member of the Iowa football team.

I am not trying to minimize the effects of Rhabdo, or the reaction to it. I re-read a story regarding the "Junction Boys" in 1954. Bear Bryant, then at Texas Tech took over 100 players on a 10 day summer camp with temperatures averaging over 100 degrees he refused to give them water breaks. He ended the camp with around 30 players. What would the media do today to what is arguably the greatest college coach of all time? My point is that how much of this is an overreaction by a 24/7 sports media, and the inability of generation snowflake to suck it up? Ok, maybe I am trying to minimize it.

Today, we know the effects of dehydration on the body, but well in to the 60s' and 70s' coaches wouldn't give water breaks, did Doyle know the effect of what he was doing? The Oregon strength coach would have/should have had a better idea than Doyle would have. No one, especially the coaches intentionally want to hurt an athlete, but it is their job to push them to their physical limits.

Well we all know that those tactics work to harden people and make soldiers. They are just considered too cruel for the current times. Even the military has a hard time getting away with that stuff nowadays. I mean you can't even lock a kid in a storage shed these days. Looking at you Mike Leach.

Well I know at least since 1984 in the army they have not prevented soldiers from drinking water, the opposite is true.....forcing soldiers to over-hydrate which also causes problems.

Just thought you understood that science changes. The way athletes train and compete is different now that it was 50, 20, 10 and 5 years ago. Training techniques used 50 years ago are non starters now. Training techniques used 5-10 years ago are phased out as better and more effective training is learned.

My whole point is that was the way many were trained and those workouts were used for a long time and were thought to be building athletes. When Josh compared it to Pedo St., it just struck a nerve with me. Saying that an accepted at the time training technique is somehow like a child molester knowing being allowed access to children is beyond the pale....but frankly I really should expect anything less from Josh.

For some reason it doesn't bother you that Josh would make this comparison, but it offends you that I say that their is no comparing the two....this makes me a "homer" in your eye.

Now onto your awesomeness health......good for you!!!!

OK Dean, nice post. 50 years ago, that's funny. But, when I see video from 50 years ago, the players weren't fat either.

Abuse is devastating regardless of whether done by pedophiles or a drunk angry dad. It can come in the form of emotional abuse by a teacher or coach. My own high school coach took a player by the facemask and pulled his helmet with his head in it into the goal post. While in Jr. high a friend who was a tough was offside in practice and had to run a lap for it was stampeded by the varsity and trampled under the direction of THAT coach. The kid came back crying and bloody with cleat marks. This coach is a Hall of Farm Iowa High School coach and one a Jr. College NC. Some thnk he's next to God. I think he is still coaching and shouldn't be around kids either.

Coin it how you want to, but a program that drives young players into excersizing into Rhabdo is abusive. Abusers also are identifiable because they make the victims the problem. The real telling sign is the award. You won't change my mind and the mind of others. If you chose not to see similarities, that is your choice. If I see similarities, that is my choice.

I personally look forward to KF being gone as the Iowa coach some day. The connection really came in the Outback Bowl. Not because of losing and losing big. Because of what happened to CJ.
