Review of Recently Hired Coaches

Last night Chris Klieman, KSU head coach, won his 8th game in his first year at a power 5 conference school. Our old buddy Matt Campbell at ISU was 8 and 5 by his second year. Neither of the two schools they coach at has the reputation of Nebraska where one Scott Frost coaches. After year two he has yet to have a team win more than 5 games. Was it less of a challenge for Klieman and Campbell to get to winning records?

For sake of fairness let's say Scotty makes it in year three with a winning record and follows it with two or three more 9 and 3 seasons. Will Nebraska keep him? They let two 9 and 3 coaches go because they were not satisfied with just being competitive.

There is going to be a lot of head coach vacancies out there after Saturday. Missouri fired their head coach yesterday. If I'm Brian Ferentz I would apply for some of those jobs. He needs to get some head coach experience in my estimation. It's an ideal time to learn the ropes if it is his hope to become the Iowa head coach.

I think first he should assemble a dominant offense. But even then he bleeds black and gold and isn't going to want to go anywhere.
Surprising I know, but history has shown that coaches (regardless of position) like to coach at Iowa and tend to stay.
But really, they get paid well, they live in one of the best parts of the US. It's fairly safe here. People are generally "Iowa nice".
I have lived all over, one time I had the chance to move to southern California.
I did my research and even though the money was far far more, I didn't take it.
I mean look, say you go lower in the daft, you are going to make $200k a year. Do you think that money goes further in Minneapolis or Kansas City or in San Francisco?
Never mind the smog. The traffic. The crime.
My point is, that sometimes it's not about the money. Its about following your heart.
Look a kid came to Iowa and his family paid for it. He kicks some balls and now is an award finalist and on scholarship. He followed his heart.
My gal and I, both looked at each other on Friday and said, he's got it, you could just see it plain as day. They could have iced him 10 times and backed him up 10 and he was still going to make that kick. My gal and I both knew it, but what is most important is he knew it.

Uh, BF is nowhere near the Power 5 Head Coach type of level right now. If he wanted to be a HC right away he would have to go C-USA or lower like even 1-AA. I DO think he could be successful at that level, if a school gave him some time like Iowa gave KF time.

I would be very happy if Brain took his "talents" elsewhere. Not sure who would want him, though.

I actually think he'd do really well at Alabama as OC if they want to run a pro style offense after Tua is gone. He has some pretty good play designs that have guys getting open, but with Iowa's line and spotty QB play, we're not really seeing the full extent of what he is doing. If he stuck around at Bama for 3 or 4 years, that offense would have a great stretch. They have big problems with assistant turnover there. I think with Kirk dictating the offense, he can't really do what he wants to and is having problems taking shots because of what Kirk wants the offense to do.

Kicker needs to mentor Stanley, Brian, Kirk...how to win, and avoid being afraid of losing.

Kirk wants to offense to punt, avoid mistakes, that's fun!

Brian is going nowhere, why would he? Stay close to the nest and safety as dad works his "magic" of finding his replacement.

Taking over this program is going to be a big job for whoever does it. The Iowa way is not something to be trifled with. Iowa doesn't need a "transformation" of how the program is run or how they play football. Brian Ferentz gets that part, I believe, but to run the football program is more than just understanding that. To me, he just isn't ready, at least right now or anytime soon. If Kirk keeps it going for another 5 years and the offense gets going and he matures some more to appear more "head coach like", whatever that means, people can be turned around to supporting him being the coach, but to turn the reigns over to him in the next couple of years I think would be a mistake. It would be rocky; I don't think it would end well, and would smudge the legacy of Kirk some too - I don't want to see that happen.

Northwestern fired their OC. If they bring in someone with flash and improve to where Iowa finishes below them and struggles offensively (with new QB might I add) for 4th straight year things will get real ugly for Kirk on his son. He needs to understand business vs family.

Arizona State fired their OC, TE coach, and WR coach after 2 years and a 7 win season. They averaged 25 ppg for 94th in the country.

Iowa is worse offensively. Third straight year YPC has declined and worst since 2004. Iowa has got to change their run scheme at least right? I think Iowa’s standards of offense is just so much lower than anyone else.

Right now BF is too much of a hothead that I can see. Kirk keeps himself and his team on an above average to high but not super high level of intensity. I agree with other posters that BF, if he wants to be the head coach at Iowa, should do like his dad who went to Maine and BF should take a HC job at a sunken P5 team but more probably a MAC or other non P5 team or even FCS team.
