Return on investment......Think about it

I thought of this earlier and thought it was a slightly different way of looking at this.

When you make a large investment in something, you expect a return on your investment, right? So with that in mind, would you spend $100,000 for a used Ford Focus??? Would you spend $500,000 on a trailer home??? Conventional wisdom tells us absolutely not.

But for some reason, the University of Iowa Athletic Department spends top dollar for a product that produces borderline average (Ford Focus) results. And there are some fans that continue to think that this is a good investment. Those fans are as much to blame as the Athletic Department because they accept and support an inferior product. All of us need to continue to voice our frustrations in any way that we can. If we want to put a winner on the field, make you voice and frustrations heard in any way that you can.

When you buy Iowa merchandise, a large portion of that money goes to the athletic department. So essentially, whether you know it or not, we are all donors in one way or another. Stop investing your money in a poor investment. Hold on to your wallet and make a statement. We need to let them know that we don't support them spending our tax dollars to put a average football team and coaching staff on the field. It will have to hurt them in their pocket book before anything changes. And this does not make you a bad fan in my opinion, it just means you refuse to support a loser.

Grab your Hawk **** out of the closet peeps. There be a bonfire tonight and that $10 Wally World Iowa T-shirt will burn just fine!

Haha...the part about buying Iowa merchandise making people donors made me laffy. What a stupid post.

How many tax dollars did the Iowa football program spend last year? K thx bai.

And it appears your tax dollars go to teh University of Nebraska.

Kirk Ferentz is a state employee and a portion of your tax dollars goes toward paying his salary. When you buy merchandise, portions of it go to the U of I. How does that not make sense??

The Focus is timeless and reliable, it will get you to 7 wins almost every time:

The Iowa athletic department receives no state tax money, they haven't for a few years.

And your tax money pays Bo Pelini, please take this to a Husker board.

7 wins!!!! We can become a permanent staple at the Insight Bowl, I mean the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl now! LOL!

Bud, you live in Nebraska. That means you are a donor to the Nebraska football program. Please take these arguments to the Husker board.

The average home attendance in 2000 (just a date that I could find from the past) was 63,464. This year, it has been 70,585, which is 7121 per game, or a total of 49,847 more than 12 years ago. That is $2.5 million more IF you figure only $50 per person. That doesn't take into account the increase in ticket price because of ticket demand.

If you want to start talking economics, the $4M a year is an investment into becoming a top 15 revenue program.

the athletic department receives some student fee money, but it goes toward the new rec facility.

And this is the only thing that matters in college football.

To the OP, hey if you don't want to spend your money on Iowa football, don't. I agree with you that the only way things will change is if the bottom line gets hurt. However, odds are somebody will take your place at the game though. At least for awhile anyway.

Really? How do you figure?

The television money is what it is.....we aren't the Big 12 and distribute tv money based on how many times you are on TV....the B1G splits it evenly, so you could be the coach and the tv money stays the same.

As far as donors, do you really think Bill Krause, Dick Jacobson or any of the other big donors will stop donating because Ferentz isn't the coach? Please!

Merchandise revenue is such a small portion of the revenue coming in that it doesn't factor into the equation.

We'll be a top 15 revenue AD regardless of whether or not KF is the coach.

"Let me see now, Iowa can’t expect much, so it pays a middling coach $4 million to get it. Meanwhile, the mighty powers of Texas Tech, Boise State, Rutgers, Louisville, Oregon State, Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, Arizona, Ohio, Toledo, Kent State, and Tulsa are in the top 25 or 30 right now.

I get it. Indeed, how could poor little old Iowa ever compete with the likes of Kansas State, which is in line to play for the national championship this year. Why, that beautiful stadium in the heart of Manhattan (Kansas, that is) and its teeming azure beaches filled with bikini-clad co-eds and college football stars waiting around to be plucked like so many ears of corn? And that sexy head coach, Bill Snyder, who escaped the prison of Iowa City and has shown, twice, that once he had all the advantages K-State could offer, including its long and storied football tradition, there was no stopping him — even though he is about 112 years old now.

So sure. You’re right. No way Iowa can match the likes of K-State, Louisville, Mississippi State, Ohio, Toledo, Kent State or Tulsa. Hawkeye fans must be delusional to think such thoughts."

He'd love to, but when Nebraska has an underperforming coach, they run him.

Unfair comparison bro! They have recruiting advantages over Iowa. Nebraska is loaded with instate .......wait...ok....um....The weather in Nebraska is so much bett....wait...ok umm. Yeah.
