Respect for coaches

It seems some fans wanted the Iowa coaches to "run up" the score on Penn State. It is not our coaching staff's modus operandi to do that, especially against a teams whose head coach is revered by so many across America. I commend our staff for that stance and fully support the conservative second half decision to just let the team play its best on both sides of the ball, which they certainly did! HarryR

some fans forget the Class aspect of this coaching staff.
The win is the important factor.
I beleive last year when we had to Open up the scoring-Indianna-we were able to!
Also the Penn st. D is getting no respect. The Penn st D will hold most other Big10 teams below 20pts.

The coaches taking their foot off the gas had absolutely NOTHING to do with not wanting to run up the score. You are correct in that they would never do that, if given the opportunity, but it was not a factor Saturday night.

Our coaches do this because they believe it gives us the best possible chance to WIN THE GAME. Up 17-3, we are one freshman fumble, one Ricky Stanzi pick six, one bootleg getting blown up...from PSU being right back in the game.

As long as we were up 2 scores, the coaching staff was content to go 'turtle mode'. They didn't think PSU could - without help - get it in the end zone twice against our defense. As much as many of us don't particularly care for the philosophy - they were right.

Again, our coaching staff is first class & would never run up the score on anyone...let alone a college football legend. However, that was not an issue Saturday. Going conservative was meant to win the game...period.

Um....we were down just about the whole game that day. How about Arkansas State? We didn't just turn it on when they started making a game of it. And Northwestern in 2005. We're very rarely a team that can just flip a switch offensively.

I've come to the conclusion that our issue Saturday was more with execution than play-calling, so I'm not quite as upset. But I do wish we could have gotten one more offensive score before Prater's pick 6.

i think we'd run up the score if given the chance...tell me we wouldn't blow up on tOSU if the coaches had that chance

Kirk said at Haftime intvw "hope keep foot on gas" but play calling did not reflect that! so after poor field pos and Poor execution I feel play calling went conservative

I thought I was the only one who noticed the irony of the "keeping the foot on the gas" comment and the subsequent trying hard not to lose strategy of the second half.

KF might have meant on "D" but Penn St. D did come out in 2nd half ready to play!

Yeah....I thought of that too.

Poor Reisner......after catching 20 passes in the first half he must have had the football equivalent of "blue balls" in the second half.

Good Lord! Stop beating a dead horse. There has been 357 threads on this already. Jump in those if you want to discuss.

And for the last damn time, 99.99999% of those questioning the play calling DID NOT DO SO B/C THEY WANTED TO "RUN THE SCORE UP"!!!! They wanted security and to put the game out of reach when we had the chance. END. DONE. NEW SUBJECT!!!!

You might want to try some decaf.

Hahahaha! Just tired of this subject. It's been hashed and re-hashed to point where we just need to move on. Especially when someone on their first post makes a sweeping gereralization that's completely inaccurate. Less than a handful of people wanted to "run the score up".
