Renovating Kinnick

As much as I love Kinnick, I would love to see them crank up the seating to somewhere around 100,000+. I know about about the current problem with area around and the limitations. It would still be a sellout every Saturday. Thoughts and Opinions?

I think hyperbole is great for a person's first post. Post number 2 should be as entertaining.

I would like to see it max around 85,000. 100,000+ wouldnt sell out ever.

85K would still be too much. We only have to go back to the 2009 Arkansas State game to find the last time we did not sell out 70,585. In 2008 we didnt sell out a conference game against Purdue.

Current capacity is perfect.

100,000+? I'm pretty sure there aren't even 100,000+ people in the state of Iowa. You'd have to hope a lot of people drive in from neighboring states...

I certainly hope this was exaggerated intentionally. There's like 3 million people in Iowa.

That said: 80,000 would be the absolute max, IMO. We could probably sell that out consistently.

It's at a perfect capacity right now. We sell out games, but still have some demand outside of that. 80,000 would be the absolute max, and even at that number, I doubt we sell out every game.

This year we could have sold that out. Any other year, I doubt it.

LOL

Anyway, I agree about the 80,000 bit. Unless we become Ohio State, and are consistently in the running for the Big Ten title, a BCS bowl at the least and contenders for the NCG, I can't see us selling out consistently or needing consistently more than 75-80k...

I think it would sell out if they expanded to 85,000 because they would decrease the ticket price with a higher capacity. There are easily 15,000 fans in IC on gameday's without game tickets.

In years like 2007, no. In years like this past year, absolutely. But then the years where expectations are neutral/slightly positive (2009, 2003, etc.) I think we could sell out conference games, and an OOC game or two depending on who we're playing.

Attendance under Ferentz

1999- 63,464 per game
2000- 61,123 per game
2001- 64,665 per game
2002- 64,643 per game
2003- 65,798 per game
2004- 70,397 per game*
2005- 70,585 per game*
2006- 70,585 per game*
2007- 70,585 per game*
2008- 70,169 per game
2009- 70,214 per game
2010- 70,585 per game*

* Denotes sellout for entire season.

We have sold out the entire season 5 out of 12 years. The closest we came in Fry's tenure is averaging 70,071 fans per game in 1990. The only year in the history of Iowa football that we would have sold out an 80,000 seat Kinnick Stadium would have been 2010.

I've been attending Iowa games for 30 years with season tickets for the last 12. In that time I've seen many a Saturday with attendance between 55 and 65 thousand. That's a crowd many a school would love to have and rightfully so. Kinnick looks fairly full with that crowd. Increase capacity by even 10k and the stadium will look sparse for those games. If you think those days are long ago in our rear view mirror you have a lot to learn.

If we weren't competing with ISU or even UNI for fans and $$$ then maybe we could support a stadium of 80 or 85k. We also have quite a few d3 schools and similar that can cut into attendance on any given Saturday.
