Wally is a good DC. A lot of stats bear that out. Whether he has good enough ingredients this year remains to be seen. I do think they will sell out to stop the run and it's tough to run against that even if there is a talent disparity.

I agree, McCarney had his defense sell out against the run and it finally started to pay off. Wally does the same thing.

If you remember them stopping us last year when we had first and goal at the 3 or 4, their whole defense slanted toward the first movement every play the whole game. they werent worried about any counter plays.

I hope the hawks have some adjustments to counter their sell out.

I've listened to several of Wally's interviews and the constant theme to them is stop the run before you think of doing anything else. He either says this directly or implies it in every interview. Shouldn't be a surprise. That's about as basic as you can get when you are running a defense. He knows he has to be risky as he's never had a whole lot of talent since he's been in Ames. So, expect several different blitzes during the big game. Can't wait, by the way. Starting to get pumped since I saw the two deep roster.

I remember this game well. Iowa chose to receive into a 30 mile per hour wind. It was also hot and humid. Young had a great game, but when he needed to come out Iowa replaced him with Schnoor as opposed to Sims or Greene. Schnoor was a nice player, but he just could not get through the holes like Young was able to, so the runs that were going for 8, 10 12 yards all of a sudden stopped. Several Iowa drives stalled when Young rattled off some good gains but had to come out due to fatigue. Probably wouldn't have mattered as ISU just kicked Iowa's tail most of the day. The 2005 Iowa State D was for real with Dobbins in the middle.

Another thing about that game, though. McCarney essentially lost his chance to win the divisional title that game. Instead of properly managing an already injured Stevie Hicks, McCarney worked him into the ground in order to ensure the win. ISU went on to lose a couple of really close games b/c their other backs were not very good and had fumbilitis. Had ISU had a healthy Hicks for their conference schedule they probably easily win the Big 12 North.

Choosing to receive the opening kick theoretically gave the Hawkeyes the wind in the 4th quarter. Either way, each team has the wind behind them half the game. The Hawkeyes didn't lose because of the wind.

Even bad teams can sell out to stop the run or even one superstar player sometimes. The cool thing about football is that you can't take away everything. As Hayden has always said. Scratch where it itches. I look forward to Iowa being able to run all over them as it should be Iowa's strength against their weakest link. Not to mention there isn't a more demoralizing way for them to lose then by Iowa just methodically running the ball down their throats methodically all game long. With one or 2 big play action plays over the top for good measure. First things first I'm pretty fired up to see how they look against NIU

Well that would have been the first time their football team won any type of title I believe.

I didnt used to not like the clowns when the series resumed in the late 70's but then they got some coaches who just didnt seem like straight shooters, McCarney had his baggage, Walden (well Bielema told him best), Duncan and a couple of others.

But I dont know why I should dislike them so much when I liked them before the series resumed. I grew up in Des Moines a huge hawk fan but I watched and like the clones, it was just that they never won or won anything.

They would get beat by Drake and Pacific, etc.

Maybe I should just be neutral about them since I dont think they can recruit much better than they are and win much.

DUH!!! you know what the wind is like at the start of the game during the coin flip but you dont know what it will be like 2 1/2 to 3 hours later.

Have you ever been in jack trice with that wind coming through, I have several times and it can definitely set the tone for the game.

I bet if you go back and look at the 2008 game I think it was where they beat us with 5 FGs you will see how the wind affected that game.

You remember it well. Another example of KF taking the ball when the wind was coming due south at 30+ mph.

I just cant understand why KF cant learn to take the wind sometimes to start the game, win the toss then you defer , they take the ball and then you choose the wind at your back.

We lost the game to Chizek Cheesesticks clowns there for the same reason when they kicked 3 first qtr FGs with a strong wind. DUH

For the same reason he cannot figure out how to manage a clock at the end of a game; math is hard!

^^^ this strategy is a whole different topic that has been discussed to death and I agree with you. Teams could always game plan against Iowa to get a fast wideout or RB on a middle or other linebacker late in the game when they needed it (example, 2010 OSU game).

It's fine when Iowa has the personnel that can handle it. Guys like Edds and Greenway held their own in those situations. Guys like Klink and Humpal...not so much.

Honestly though, their front seven are bad. I heard on KXnO last night the beat writer from the Ames Tribune said that ISU's RBs were dominating in camp, and it wasn't because of the RB talent level.

I disagree. Iowa moved the ball all day even with Manson. Just kept turning it over.

Had Tate not gone out Iowa wins easily. (McCollum should have been #2 also)

So many blown games that season, but thats what happens when you are to arrogant to adjust for the wind and think you can play less talented seniors over a guy like Shonn Greene.

I remember being generally shell shocked that season, the beginning of reality setting in that KFs methods weren't going to work nearly as well as we or he thought.

Humpal was actually very good in coverage. Klink was poor though.

Since Edds and Angerer left we gotten smaller yet somehow significantly worse in coverage, and also worse at tackling.

fFrom the moment of the first seconds on the air, I had a bad feelinga bout that game. So often they seem a lot more motivated than the hawks. Hope that the hawks curb stomp them this year.

James Cleveland dropped a crucial pass at the goal line if he catches that and Iowa scores a touchdown instead of kicking a FG, at least it would have forced ISU to score a touchdown.
