Reggie Spearman

At the end of the BTN special, Howard Griffith said he thought Spearman, a true freshman, could see some action as a rush end in nickel situations.

This is the first peep of Spearmans name that I have heard all camp and combine that with the chatter that we heard about playing a LB as a rush end on obvious passing downs, maybe Reggie has turned some heads.

Thoughts?

Spearman has a ton of upside. He's the youngest guy on the team (birthdate: August 1996, let that sink in for a sec), so I had thought all along that he would redshirt just so the coaches would see how he develops physically. From his high school video (games and highlights), he showed a lot of speed and strength, but the question was how well he would do when he goes up against competent blockers who don't let him get his speed going before they hit him. If he plays DE this fall, I think its a good indication that he is handing the blocking better than expected.

August of 96 would mean he just turned 17. Can this be right?

lots of talent but needs some meat on his bones. ESPN recruiting had him at 6'1", 218.

He's now listed at 6'3", 225 on our roster. I could maybe see him putting him putting one 7 lbs of muscle in 6 months. But two inches taller?

At that age, not at all surprising. My 17-year-old went from size 9 shoes to size 12 between February and August one year, and grew at least 2 inches in a six month span. He's now about 6' 3" and 185...and he's two months older than Reggie.

Didn't he just turn 17? Wouldn't that make him the youngest player ever to see the field in B1G history? I would say there's about a ZERO percent chance of that happening, and these BTN idiots know as much about Iowa's football program as my senile, 90 year old grandmother.

Hard to believe we burn his shirt with the LB depth right now. Alston, Collins, and Perry have some experience and you want to make sure a really young guy like Spearman gets a chance to develop a bit more physically. From what I hear, it's going to be Meier who has his hand in the ground on 3rd down.

Considering his age, growing 2 inches in 6 months is not at all surprising.

Count me in as someone who would be shocked to see him contribute this year. That's why I was surprised to hear Howard say that. Unless he's proven to be some sort of freak athlete, a kid his age should be given a year to develop both mentally and physically.

I was surprised to hear that as well. I thought I heard the coaches were high on Daumantus Veneckus-Cuchiarra (sp?), but I hadn't heard about Spearman. To have a 17 year old playing would be insssaaaaanneee!

especially on the DL, or that close to the ball.

Marble was 17 too right? now, i know it isn't football, but still, very impressive

That is pretty crazy. If my math isn't failing me he would have been one of the younger kids in his class(ex. turning 5 just before he started K) and then somewhere during K-12 he must have skipped a grade entirely or accumulated enough credits to graduate as a JR.
