Los Angeles Clippers' Reggie Evans does one thing really well - ESPN Los Angeles

This was a good read. Small part from article:

Although still widely overlooked by the everyday fan, rebound rate is among the most easily digestible of the advanced stats to recently intrude upon the game's lexicon. Unlike its forefather, rebounds per game, rebound rate measures the percentage of available missed shots obtained while on the floor. What you're left with is a clearer picture of an individual rebounder's worth, one unmitigated by the influence of factors like playing time, pace and an opponent's shooting percentage.

The statistic has largely defined the 10 seasons Evans has spent in the league, spread out between stops in Seattle, Denver, Philadelphia, Toronto and now Los Angeles with the fast-rising Clippers. Evans himself had never heard of it.

Not once has Evans placed among the league's top 10 in rebounds per game at season's end, and only once has he finished with a double-digit average -- last season, when he averaged 11.5 in only 30 games, not enough to qualify for the leaderboard. But on a per-minute basis, he's a something of a rebounding legend. Evans has finished with a rebound rate of more than 19 nine times in his career, a feat bested by only Moses Malone (12) and Dennis Rodman (11), according to Basketball-Reference.com. His career rate of 21.1 would place him third in NBA/ABA history, and second behind only Rodman in NBA history.

from the article:

"Seattle SuperSonics coach Nate McMillan narrowed Evans' responsibilities as soon as he arrived in the pros as an undrafted free agent. From then on, McMillan mandated, his game would center on only four things: rebound, set picks, play defense and give energy."

I think most of us fans thought he could make it in the NBA if his rebounding prowess continued. To think his rebound rate is that good is a little shocking.

If Reggie would put on a dress and become an attention whore like like Rodman, them maybe he would get noticed more.:D

Think about the Hawkeyes that have some of the best NBA longevity. Bullard, Lohaus, Evans, Bowen, etc. Of course you have stars like BJ Armstrong and others I'm forgetting, but these other guys played for a very long time and aren't some of the first names Iowa fans think of w/r/t famous alums (even Kevin Gamble can go in this bucket - in the shadows of Marble, Horton, etc., via the CBA, etc., but played with Boston for many years). No real point except that it appears that Evans is the only Iowa player in the NBA (is Ricky Davis still in), which is sad and that our most successful alums are not the guys you'd think of first.

We must not forget Don Nelson who was a two time All American at Iowa, and played on five NBA championship teams for the Boston Celtics.....

He has been called the best sixth man in NBA history......

Not only that but he made one of the best shots in NBA history in the last seconds of the seventh game against the Lakers in LA.....

His shot that has not been heard around the World these days comes at about 3:15 on this Youtube video.....

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2AGB7SrvK8"]Lookback at the 1969 Boston Celtics - YouTube[/ame]

Love Reggie and his blue collar workmanship attitude, in addition to his mental mastery over the opponents.....

:D

At least they showed a pic of him in the Iowa uniform. :)
More publicity for the Hawkeyes.....

love his hawkeye tattoo on his right biceps also ...........mel could easily turn into a version of Reggie with a bit more of an offensive game if he has the right attitude towards rebounding and defense.

If we're including Don Nelson (QC Times had a nice write up about him a week or two ago), then why not include Downtown Freddy Brown and John JJ Johnson? They too were NBA champs for the Seattle Supersonics. Freddy still holds team records, and JJ was the first "point forward" in the game.
