Redshirt Eligible for 2017-18

I heard on Jon's podcast that Williams and Dailey are available to potentially redshirt this season. Are they the only two players who are eligible to redshirt this year, or are there any other players that could maybe redshirt this year for us? Not that this is a tremendous option, just wondering.

If there are any guards on Iowa's roster that can't find playing time this year, Iowa would be better off if they transferred to make room for an upgrade rather than use a scholarship for another year. If anyone redshirts, it ought to be someone in the front court. If FM could identify who may be the "odd man out" before the season started, saving a year for that player could be valuable to both the player and the Hawks. That could be Nunge, Kreiner or Pemsl (depending on health). All 3 clearly are talented enough to play well as I'm sure JU was as a true F at WI. Rather, it's a numbers game.

Baer also had red shirted. Fran said Wednesday that there have been no discussions about red shirting Garza or Nunge, which makes sense.

If we redshirted one guy, who would you most fine with it being?

Uhl. Let him red shirt this year and be a grad transfer next. Next would be one of the freshmen. It would maybe hurt a little this year but having either one of them for a 5th year would be awesome. I know that isn't going to happen and I don't even want it to, but none of the other guys make any sense at all to redshirt.

Right now, Daily is the only one I would see red-shirting, but that probably won't happen.

I've mentioned in another thread that if Pemsl is not 100% I'd think he would be a candidate.

The only other possibilities, IMHO, would be Nunge or Garza. PCHawk mentioned it, but as he also said, it probably won't happen.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

It would be Daily if anyone redshirts...unless there is an injury. No way Nunge or Garza shirt. Fran was pretty transparent in his comments that we didn't protect the rim last year...and gave up way too many easy baskets in the paint. Garza and Nunge give you size and rim protectors. I was happy to hear Fran talk about Cook figuring it out on the defensive end down low. There is no way he shouldn't average 3-4 blocks a game with his athletic ability and size.

There are, relatively speaking, quite a few guys that have that type of athletic ability and size in all of D1. Yet, only four players averaged over three blocks a game last year. Saying there is "no way he shouldn't average 3-4 blocks a game" seems a little bit of a high standard that isn't really likely in his second year in college basketball.

I might be nit picking, here...I'm just sayin'...

I think the only Hawkeye to ever average 3 blocks per game in a season is Acie Earl his junior year, when he averaged almost 4 to finish second in the nation. Even he only did it once, and he left school as the Big Ten's all time leading shot blocker and a first round NBA pick. I hesitate to say he has no chance, but I'll say 99.9 percent chance Cook never averages 3 blocks per game. Cook is also foul prone thus far, so he'll likely spend plenty of first halves on the bench with two fouls if Fran sticks to his pattern of sitting them the rest of the half, which affects minutes and how hard you can challenge shots later in the game also.

I'm starting to wonder whether redshirting a guy like Nunge might set up a vulture scenario his grad transfer year. We saw this last year with Syracuse and Nebraska and I realize Nebraska isn't the most stable of programs but you never know. The one and done rule is definitely going away so maybe this could be the next "epidemic". I realize this all sounds like conspiracy theory stuff but its an option I've never really considered.
