Recruiting Target Updates

Since the last thread got completely sidetracked with a bunch of bs. Eric Bossi has a free article out with some Iowa interests.

Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting - Big day at Spiece on Saturday

Jermaine Morgan, Mac Irvin Fire- Over the past couple of years, the 6-foot-7 junior has showed flashes. Lately, he's become much more aggressive on offense. Not a banger, but a quick guy who can also shoot out to between 15 and 17 feet. Morgan listed Iowa, Virginia Tech, Minnesota and Illinois-Chicago.

Steve Haney, SG, Michigan Mustangs 16's- The 6-foot-4 sophomore has a big-time rep as a jump shooter and he backed up the hype. Though skinny, he does have more to his game than just dropping in shots from deep. Already lists Michigan, Penn State, Central Michigan, Harvard, Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and others.

Martin Brothers Attack wing Kale Abrahamson has big-time grades to go along with a pure jumper from deep. The 6-foot-5 junior has already scored a 30 on the ACT and he's added quite a bit to his game off of the dribble over the last year. He currently holds offers from Wake Forest, Nebraska, Creighton, Iowa State, Albany, Northern Iowa and Northwestern. Stanford, Iowa and Harvard have also been in touch.

Thanks for the update. For a guy like Abrahamson who (realistically) has no shot at the NBA it would be very hard to pass up a free ride to Harvard.

I am not sure if he would get a free ride. It would have to be an academic scholarship if so because the Ivy League does not give athletic scholarships.

Also, a lot of smart kids with no shot at the NBA pass up Harvard to play in BCS conferences.

Yep, I would definitely worry more about the Stanford interest than the Harvard interest.

I'd pick Stanford over Harvard any day of the week.

Palo Alto is a great town and the Stanford campus is beautiful.

I have never understood about how an academic scholarship works at the Ivy league schools. Can't they just give a full academic scholarship to whomever they want? if so, why is it a big deal that they don't award athletic scholarships if the academic scholarship simply takes its place? If the kid scores highly on the ACT, doesn't that allow him to get the academic scholarship? And if he only gets a 25-27 ACT, can't he get some combo of scholarship for academics and need, if they so desired?

Okay, having never seen this kid play, what is the story on his game? His size has intrigued me for a couple years watching recruiting boards, but having seen him recently go from a No* kid to a 3-star kid in the last month or so has made me wonder what type of prospect he is.
Also, Rivals has him now listed at 6-7, how tall is he really and would be an Aaron White type of player?

FWIW; about every thread does...it sucks, but see some comments in this one about academic/athletic scholarships...I am more interested about the players you mentioned than if Harvard is a better place than Stanford or whatever. Can the kids you mentioned play and how much interest do they have in Iowa?

I haven't seen him play much either so I cannot tell you a whole lot. But from reading things it seems like he would be a player who could excel at the mid major level but struggle at the BCS level. I thought I remember his biggest knock being athleticism and a funky shooting form (slow release) which are two of the more important things separating mid majors from the majors.

I know people on the Creighton board have likened him to Korver, who was certainly a MVC type talent out of high school.

He can really handle the ball for his size.
His shot is weird...not sure if it's slow...just weird. Hard to describe. He'll be a high major player.

I have to agree with you. Stanford is a great campus. If you go 6 blocks outside of the campus though, look out. Really weird that it sits where it does. Maybe the icon for college campus'.

In a thread a couple months ago a guy with knowledge of the situation at Valley (pre-Jok) insisted that Abrahamson had little to no interest in playing for Iowa.

Full disclosure: Ive known Kale and his family since he moved here in 8th grade and I know for sure that Stanford will be offering soon and is probably his number one choice. Hes taking a visit to NU soon and has some interest in them but not a whole lot. He just doesnt have interest in Iowa schools. UNI was his first offer and he barely even acknowledged it when it happened. The kids dream is Duke but thats most likely not gona happen. Hes a fun player to watch and can get a whole lot better.

Does anyone have any info on where the Hawkeyes stand with Wes Staten from SC Heelan? I would love to land that kid. I know, there MIGHT be baggage, but that is almost pure speculation as far as I'm concerned. His talent is real. He is a borderline top-100 player nationally.

Interesting to note that Morgan is from Mac Irvin Fire, same squad as Jabari Parker. Parker is a Simeon kid; Simeon's most famous alum is Derrick Rose, who is represented by Iowa great BJ Armstrong. Parker's mom's cousin is Tony Moeaki. Iowa might just position themselves into shocking the world in 2013.

Or maybe I need to go to bed. I am really tired.

But where does Kevin Bacon fit into all this? ;)

Michael Jordan is at the end of Malcolm X. Matt Dillon was also in that movie. Matt Dillon was in Loverboy with KB. Just 1985 saying, "Yo."
